    SYDNEY ROOSTERS Harold Mathews Cup
    Captain: Jeziah Papa
    Coach: Chris Crotty
    Last season: Semi finalists (5-3)
Why they will be competitive: You’d be crazy to write off any Roosters pathways team as not being in the race for a finals spot.
Despite many of their players opting into the junior reps system for the first time, head of recruitment Daniel Anderson said the goal is for the U17s to progress through to the postseason.
“We have two boys backing up from last year,” he said.
“Harold Matts is always a new team and a new experience for a lot of these players. For many it’s the first time they’ve played in a serious representative competition with a finals series.
“It’s a bit of an unknown for every club. With us it’s one where we don’t know. We could be mid-table, but making the semi finals is the goal for us.
“We don’t have a big junior league catchment but we do know that we have a few good players.
“Our trials have been okay. Sometimes they provide more questions than answers. It’s all new and while you want to start confidently, you have to play well at the end of the year.
“While we haven’t trialled the lights out, we haven’t been poor. We’ll be looking for a bit of growth over the season.”
Key fixture: Penrith Panthers (Home, Round 4). A tough start to the season with Parramatta in round two followed by a bye, the Roosters will be looking to come out of that fresh against a Panthers side looking for redemption. It promises to be a cracking contest in the first half of the season.
Players to watch: Lachlan Metcalfe was outstanding for the Roosters after making the switch from Parramatta. The young halfback was named as the club’s best back in 2024 and with a season of this level already under his belt, he’s set to rise to a new level. Jeziah Papa was a City U16s representative from last season and the halves partner of Metcalfe is another that will continue to rise
Triston Ross - Makes the move to the big smoke after impressing with the Western Rams last year in the Andrew Johns Cup. Shifts from five-eighth to fullback, but his willingness to get involved will see him fit there like a glove.
Squad: Triston Ross, Filipe Fakauho, Jeziah Papa, Basiton Armstrong, Daniel Ibrahim, Charlie Webb, Lachlan Metcalfe, Chalreston Te Rore, Kalen Cashin, Agapetos Lote-Felo, Ravai Tulevu, Jackson Rodwell, Marquis Sando, Payton Gifford, Paula Teisina, Jairo Senio, Roman Leilua, Cooper Moore

    SG BALL SYDNEY ROOSTERS
    Captain: Jaxson Allen
    Coach: Boyd Cordner
    Last season: Prelim finalists (9-0)
Why they will be competitive: The Roosters have been among the top teams in SG Ball in recent years, including winning the minor premiership in three of the past four seasons.
This side will feature the best of their Sydney and Central Coast based talent coming together as one.
Club legend Boyd Cordner will take over as head coach, and despite a pre-season that has been challenging to get the group together in the one spot, head of recruitment Daniel Anderson believes they will be in the mix once again.
“We’ve performed strongly over the past few years and we feel we’ve got a team to be competitive once again,” he said.
“Last year we had two boys (Blake Steep and De La Salle Va’a) that went on to play first grade and we’re hopeful that (at least) one player can step up and replicate that by the end of the year.
“Jake Elliott is another that played a stack of reserve grade and performed well for the NSW U19s. We see this as a real stepping stone.
“It’s a very slow burn this team.
“We have a lot of players that do a little bit of training with the NRL squad and geographically we’re about 100km apart.
“Some do group training and some individual training. Last weekend we trialled with all of our players available. I think we’re going to be competitive.”
Key fixture: Canterbury Bulldogs (Home, Round 8). The Bulldogs knocked them out of the finals last season and both teams promise to be strong once again. By round eight the ladder will well and truly have taken shape
    Players to watch:
Toby Rodwell steps into the NRL’s top 30 on a four-year deal with the club. He was a major part of their unbeaten regular season last year and will again be a standout if he sees time at this level.
Rex Bassingthwaighte took the Harold Matthews competition by storm last year with his blistering pace. The Roosters secured his signature ahead of rugby union.
Jaxson Allen with another big forward pack set to line up, Jaxson Allen will be crucial at hooker to getting them on the front foot. Has been given the task of captaining the side, a role that looks suited to the talented hooker.
Squad: Rex Bassingthwaighte, Michael Nassar, Jackson Stewart, Brooklyn Heath, Baxter Warner, Brooklyn Rosemeyer, Tyson Walker, Peter Benjamin Uini, Jaxson Allen, Kanaan Magele, Darcy Smith, Lachlan Dooner, Josiah Fesolai, James Finnegan, Kynan Toevai, Eddy Cayless, Phillip Lavakeiaho, Toby Rodwell

10 to Watch in '24 | Max McCathie

Following in the footsteps of fellow Sydney Roosters back-rower Siua Wong, Max McCathie is the latest pathways player to be making a name for himself with the tricolours.

Being a part of the Roosters’ Junior Representative system since 2022, McCathie has become a mainstay at Bondi.

McCathie was part of the Roosters’ successful UNE SG Ball Cup squad in 2022, playing nine games including the Grand Final against the Penrith Panthers at CommBank Stadium.

In 2023, the talented back-rower was named captain for the Jersey Flegg Cup team and played a pivotal role in helping his team to claiming the Minor Premiership.

He made 22 appearances with four tries, four try assists, eight line-breaks, five line-break assists, 64 tackle-busts and 16 offloads, averaging 113 run metres.

Following a breakout season, McCathie was awarded NSWRL Jersey Flegg Cup Player of the Year as well as the Arthur Beetson Medal for the Roosters’ Jersey Flegg Player of the Year.

Coming through the Junior Representative system with teammates Cassius Tia, Xavier Chatfield-Mooka and Salesi Foketi, has seen a strong combination form at the tricolours, which could become a force to be reckoned with.

In the last two years both the SG Ball and Jersey Flegg Roosters teams, which featured these four players, have secured the Minor Premiership and made the Grand Final.

With a bright future ahead for the young back-rower, a Knock-On Effect NSW Cup debut wouldn’t be far off in 2024.

Congrats to Cords on getting his first head coaching role.

I believe Max McCathie would have played NRL last year before the like of Blake Steep, if he didn't get injured - he's been one to watch for a while and probably one of the reasons the club were happy to move Sitili on

You would think our SG Ball team will be pretty strong. If I was a young player, I couldn't think of a better Rooster to inspire me than Boyd Cordner.
