Who are the 'powers that be' that is charging subscribers? It's a private company who are trying to fill a void in the market, it's nothing to do with the NRL.

I know who the private provider is. The NRL should be streaming all of these junior and lower grade games FOR FREE. or paying this provider to do so. To grow the game. Instead they allow a provider to charge $20 a month for games filmed on a smartphone, with no commentary. They get billions in TV rights the NRL, fancy charging people as much again as they pay for Kayo - live HD footage of all live sports worldwide - for this product. Bush footy never been at a lower ebb, but they want to make more money from it, instead of save it? Clueless and disgraceful.

I don't think these games are being filmed on a smartphone

All NSW Comps are run and operated by the NSWRL and not the NRL - Ditto the QRL ones which also show games live through BarTV

NRL Broadcast rights were around 1.7 billion - (2023 to 2027)

The 17 clubs combined receive around 290.7 million per annum grant from the NRL for the NRL comp- Around a total of 1.45 bill over the Broadcast deal - Leaving give or take 250 mill left over from these broadcast rights.

The NRL also funds the NRLW/Grants to the NSWRL & QRL /NRL have their own employee staffing costs / pay match officials including kits plus travel and accommodation / pay for all travel and accommodation costs for all NRL team etc.

There would be a finite amount Broadcasters will be able to pay for Broadcast/Print Media rights though - any increase the clubs will want a greater slice of the pie as well.

Maybe clubs could subsidise the costs of subscriptions to BarTV then as after all they fund their junior reps.

Fox and or Kayo would never show any and or all of these junior rep and senior rep games and before 2025 no one else did either except BarTV now in 2025. - NSWRL started to live stream selective Junior and Senior rep games in 2021 for free.

blah blah blah. You think $20 a month for access to all these junior games filmed poorly is "great value". It must be a riot at your place watching tripod junior gamers on silent. Compared to Kayo $20, Netflix $17, in terms of value.

But it's not about you. Parents shouldn't have to pay to watch their kids junior rugby league games online, even if you want to watch them all weekend. Friends who have friends playing in the various reserve grade comps should not have to signup and pay the same as what Kayo charges for worldwide live HD sport.. The NRL should pay that fee to the company who sets up the one camera at the ground and provides that dismal service.

You can watch livestreams of Tasmanian grade cricket on youtube every week but apparently it's too much for the NRL who get over a billion dollars in broadcast deals to let the lower grades be free to watch.

This is nothing more than rinsing every dollar out of the few fans who will be tuning in on a regular basis to watch these games it's embarrassing that the league can't give something back.

Agreed parents shouldn't have to pay to watch their kids play, I hope in these instances the clubs fund the subscription for the family.

The price is high because it's a niche product, it doesn't have the mass appeal of a Kayo or Netflix.

It's been a huge step up on NSWRL TV from last year though, for the best part streaming seems to be in 720p to 1080p, has live playback features, haven't had any issues with buffering & to be honest after listening to Blocker Roach commentate on our game last Sunday I would've paid $100 just to have him removed from the commentary box so it's not as bad as it sounds.

Part of this deal with NSWRL is for the profits to go back into grassroots footy and you can actually choose which comp you would like your subscription to support which I think is a nice touch. If the NRL streamed it for free the grassroots would see nothing.

Side topic, speaking of kayo, does anyone have it, and what is the quality like? I was thinking of trying it and maybe getting rid of Foxtel, but notice the subscription is going up to $40/month to be able to watch it on two devices, and from
the few mates who have it, they have constant issues with buffering and a dreaded “green screen”

never had an issue with Foxtel, but the price is creeping up to $60 for sports in HD, but I think I’d rather pay a bit more, and not have the frustration which 80-90% of online reviewers have.

Kayo is owned by Hubble a Subsidiary of FOX and have a third party partnership with ESPN. - You're not comparing apples with apples as far as the content you can access via these subsidiaries and partnerships - Kayo has over 1.5 million subscribers in Australia according to their website.

Kayo are making a minimum of 30 million a month from 1.5 million subscribers if paying a min of $20 per month as you say they are in Australia

Netflix subscribers - 6.2 million in Australia according to their site paying as you say $17 per month - 105.4 million per month - ditto above the content that can be accessed

No one would show what BarTV is currently showing - grass roots and lower tier sporting competitions across Australia and that's a fact. - of course they are not going to have the same quality of coverage compared to Kayo.

Kayo doesn't have their own camera's or commentators at any sporting event. - Basically a cheaper live stream option for people that cannot afford a FOX Subscription.

The parents could actually be at the game live which you may not realise and friends who have friends playing should get a free subscription too.

I’ve never had any issues with Kayo, but I do see a lot of people complaining about buffering and green screen but I think the quality & stability of your internet connection plays the biggest part there..

Once Foxtel lost the rights to the EPL I moved to Kayo because I only subscribe for the NRL season and then just opt out in the off-season.

The NRL does not operate or run any of the state based comps - The NSWRL/QRL do

You obviously must think the 1.7 Billion broadcast deal goes straight into the NRL Bank Account - You do realise that each NRL club for their NRL side received a grant of 17.1 million each in 2024 - that's 290.7 million - each NRL club with a NRLW side received 1.02 million - Just for the NRL a total of 1.45 billion or so would be paid as grants to the 17 clubs over the 5 years of this Broadcast agreement.

Your only argument could be the next broadcast deal as the AFL secured a 4.5 Billion broadcast rights deal over 7 years from Channel 7 , Fox and Telstra ( 2025 to 2031) - noting the current AFL deal expires in 2024

Reportedly each AFL Club will be receiving 33 or so million for each year of the 7 year deal - AFL squads range from 37 to 44 players -NRL 30 - 6 Supplementary list and extended bench players

The NRL one expires in 2027. - PNG enters the NRL in 2028 and maybe Perth as well in one way shape or form.

THE AFL has landed the biggest sports broadcast rights deal in Australian history after extending its partnership with the Seven Network, Foxtel and Telstra for another seven seasons.

The League's current broadcast rights deal goes for another two years, through to the end of 2024, but on Tuesday the AFL secured the television rights through to the end of 2031.

In one of Gillon McLachlan's final major moves as chief executive of the AFL, the League has bolstered its future with a $4.5 billion deal across the Seven, Foxtel and Telstra agreement after meeting with key bidders on Monday to hear final pitches.

Have never had a single issue with the kayo streaming, but we have fibre to the premises and 100mbs download speed. I think kayo still offers a free 14 day trial, might be worth giving it a go and seeing how it works at your place.
