I do think Toia and Mark N will be a good centre combo but limited ball to both we didn’t get to see much.

It’s disappointing that watching all of those YouTube videos and any other player podcast, interviews etc every player was throwing up how we have been focusing on defence, yet that was probably our biggest downfall all night.
tough to judge defence when you are missing Radley,Collins, butcher,Angus and Teddy at the back, against a first grade dragons team.

When is Spencer going to step up as a senior player. For someone on a lot of dough, not seeing much tbh. Whyte has shown so much more promise.
      Spencer is only 24.
      Best used off the bench.

No one on this forum wants to see us get flogged every week. We are all fans and some are more passionate than others, some whinge more than others and some just accept whatever is dished out week in week out.

We all want to see the Chooks do well this year

Only a trial so naught to be concerned about - let others compete for the 150k - bigger fish to fry once playing for real in a few weeks time.

Half the team tonight won't be playing throughout 2025

Ok effort from a thrown together team of inexperienced rookies.

Didn't disgrace the jumper...Toia impressed in the 2nd half...White always a handful with the ball.

All up what's this game mean - absolutely nothing but my overall feeling still is there's going to be more bad than good this year which was expected.

Plenty to like about our young guys.
Va'a and Toia probably the ones who will play NRL most out of all of them and both did a super job. Va'a surely starts the season on the bench. Probably best on ground tonight.
I wouldn't worry about how we played. Way too many players out. A completely different attack and defence when all our stars come back.
That Flanno try made me cringe though. Whyte just walks around in defence. Has NFI. Just hasn't improved at all the last couple of years defending inside our 20M.

That was very hard to watch.

                      Bring back the NRL Nines.

At the end of the day it was a trial. The attack was a bit off but the defence was ok and the discipline was pretty good.

Blocker summed it up pretty well when he stated the one-up attack is very easy to read, so that def needs to change.

Next week with more of the senior players back should give a better reflection of what we can expect this year.

He needs to become more than just a 20 minute impact sub he's getting paid like a main guy and needs to step up in Jared's absence

A few things stuck out for me, top 10 thoughts,

                            1. S Wong has lost pace and looks slow. Will struggle to make the 17.
                            2. Mark N will miss the 17 with R Toia and Billy Smith the centres. Robbo showed his hand, either fullback or back to Union. Very sluggish and missed tackles. Out of his league.
                            3. R Toia was great, earned himself a starting spot, great game from the young man despite no real attacking opportunities, tackled well.
                            4. We are all forgetting B Steep, strong defensivly, more leg drive than Wong. Tipping him to be the lock or bench at worst, Victor out wide.
                            5. Spencer to the bench, more effective, average display. Missing a dummy from Flanagan is highly embarrassing.
                            6. Whyte to start, had a decent game.
                            7. D Va'a , I know hes young but struggled for a big man around the ruck. Dont think he makes the 17.
                            8. Thought T Lasalu tried hard made some decent runs, I would have him replace Va'a as no 17, but wont get picked.
                            9. D young will be there, but as we all know cluless in defence.
                            10. T Rodwell behind a strong running pack is a good playmaker, worried about S Smith, missed some tackles badley. Rodwell looked more oganised with room to move.

                            My 17,

                            1. Teddy
                            2. D Young
                            3. B Smith
                            4. R Toia
                            5. Toups
                            6. S Smith
                            7. Townsend
                            8. L Collins
                            9 . C Watson
                            10. Whyte
                            11. Angus
                            12 Victor
                            13 Steep

                            14. Leniu
                            15. N Butcher
                            16. E Butcher
                            17. Lasalu

                            18. Wong

Yeah I noticed Townsend looked pretty pissed off at him in defence (and attack TBH). Maybe that's just his communication style but without hearing his words, it looked like he spent a lot of time saying 'NO NOT THERE YOU FARKING IDIOT!!! DO YOU EVEN LISTEN IN TRAINING?!?!?' IMO if he wasn't such a freakishly good physical specimen then he wouldn't be first grade.

On the other hand Toia impressed me!!! During the forst half he was quiet and I heard the commentators keep saying 'yep he's small so he's got a lot of work to do there'. Then after half time something switched... he started with a few quality defensive players and was then bumping off multiple players in attack with the commentators changing their tone to 'HE IS FAAAARKING STRONG, LOOK AT THAT!!! JESUS!!!'

Mark N didn't set the world on fire but I'm not writing him off just yet. IMO a bit like Toops early on, guys seem to get under him and drive him back as he's not used to league style tackles. Can be learned IMO and he'll be a weapon once he does. On that note though, he draws in 3-4 defenders in order to be pushed back. IDK... with Teddy floating around behind him, that could be pretty lethal if he develops a late pass / offload. Played adequate at FB too, which answers another question for 2025.

Whyte was our leader IMO. Looked like a seasoned pro and had a hand in everything. Very impressive.

The rest were kinda hit and miss. Dragons won and I'm not gonna dismiss the rest as 'just a trial'. It exposed holes (including our lack of conversions + inability to score when we had them pinned, despite having an almost full strength backline & our halves pairing until Walker returns).

On the same note I wouldn't be over-celebrating if I were a Dragons fan. The end result was a blowout score but there were extended periods where their full strength team were being pinned inside their half by NSW Cup players. Both teams are gonna have to play much better than that if they wanna make the 8 in 2025!!!

Not a great game. None of the young blokes stepped up. Despite being about 8ft tall, V'aa looked like he got injured every time he made a carry. Still a bit off first grade I think.

Spencer missed some really basic tackles including falling for the dummy from the ever dynamic and mercurial Kyle Flanagan. Rodwell looked ok in the sense he had a good kicking game, decent boot on him but he's vsing other young blokes and NSW Cup stock.

Sandon laid on the try well but his defence and other last tackle options were putrid. Looks unsure of himself.

Mark N does not look as good as I thought. Hoping he was going at 50% because its a trial game after all.
