  • Vermin injured - Murray gone, maybe Latrell

Forgive the non-Rooster story, but Souffs misfortune is always newsworthy...

South Sydney captain Cameron Murray has suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon that could rule him out for the season in a worst-case scenario.

Murray went down at Rabbitohs training on Wednesday and had to be helped from the club’s Heffron Park training paddock, while star fullback Latrell Mitchell also suffered a hamstring injury in the same session that will rule him out of Saturday’s Charity Shield clash against the Dragons.

Both will undergo scans on Wednesday, but Murray is “not expected to be available to play in the coming months,” according to the club.

Depending on the damage done to Murray’s Achilles, he could be sidelined for the Rabbitohs’ entire campaign, though club officials are already pointing to Darius Boyd’s five-month recovery from a similar injury at Brisbane in 2015.

Mitchell was able to leave South Sydney’s field session of his own accord after pulling up lame, but has a history of hamstring injuries having torn tendons in his left hamstring in 2020 and 2022.

Murray’s ankle injury continues a wretched injury run for one of the Rabbitohs highest-paid players.

The 27-year-old only just returned to training alongside his teammates after undergoing wrist surgery late last year to repair his scapholunate ligament after playing with the injury for Australia in the Pacific Championships.

Murray had been pushing to be available for Wayne Bennett’s round one return as Rabbitohs coach against his old club the Dolphins on March 7.

Mitchell was earlier this month ruled free to play against the Dolphins after the NRL ruled his one-game suspension could be served in the recent All Stars match.

Luckless centre Campbell Graham continues to train and manage a fractured hand picked up two weeks ago, while prop Junior Tatola is also running again after two foot operations and an infection that threatened his career and limited him to the first six games of 2024.

Murray is a hard player to dislike. That's awful news for the bloke.

Trell's thing seems like a storm in a teacup. Still reckon he'll have a big season. He's certainly due for one. Unless Bennet dies mid-year and the grief is too much. What is he, 200?

Mitchell has torn his heartilage again.

2 weeks on the farm should fix it.

It took him about 2 months to get over his last “minor strain”. I wouldn’t mind betting he’s not one of the most studious rehabbers.

Being captain could bring out the best in Latrell. I hope not.

IMO his excess weight says it all. He's strong and does the big things right but comes across as the kinda guy who's either all there or missing with tasks.

As a middle-aged marathon runner who trains daily (and has qualified for two majors), I think it's fair to say that my aerobic fitness, VO2 Max and % body fat are in a category well above old mate's.

Yes his footy skills, strength, wrestling technique, game awareness...etc (which he no doubt works hard on) are all in a category of his own. Certainly not questioning that.

However, I reckon his career's been hampered by a lack of attention to detail. I'd be disappointed if he stayed at Easts and continued along this path. He peaked in ~2019 and we've seen what he can do. Could learn a thing or two from Teddy about keeping fit and injury free though.

Sad news for Murray. Always liked him even though he milk pens sometimes, they all do.

Fatrell will have a good year I think. He's got Bennett there like he wanted, surely a minor niggle will only keep him out for a couple weeks. If he doesn't fire up this season, I feel Souffs should really look at letting him go. Another injury hit or non event season and you are starting to look at his value as a marquee player. For that reason alone I think he'll have a monster year as he's playing for his Souffs career at this point and I think Bennett has probably told him just as much.

Any Roosters supporter who dont want the Vermin to fail in any way possible is obviously a Vermin stooge

Latrell was injured while racing Schuster to the buffet. Apparantely John wasn't happy to get there second so he now wants out of the club.

I'll never be happy to hear anyone is injured but hearing that Souths are weakened is always good news.

I wish Latrell and Cameron a speedy recovery.
