  • MANU SIGNS FRENCH DEAL - Daily Tele

Roosters NRL fans hoping Joey Manu will head back to Bondi following his stint in Japanese rugby will be disappointed to learn he’s set to sign a one-year deal with French Top 14 club Racing Metro.

Manu is playing his trade with Toyota Verblitz this year and is said to be loving his rugby experience and life abroad.

Racing Metro, who have overseas stars Owen Farrell and Josua Tuisova in their backline, managed to free some cash when Springboks captain Siya Kolisi made the decision to return to South Africa a year early.

While many believed Manu would chase an All Blacks jersey when he made the decision to switch to union, the reality is that is now a distant prospect, and he is more focused on with global experiences the game has to offer.

The only caveat is how long his partner wants to remain abroad.

Should that become a concern, expect the Roosters to jump on a deal that could potentially bring him back midway through next year.

Manu will be one of a host of stars RA is looking to invite to join their Invitational Australian and New Zealand team to play the British & Irish Lions in July.

We hear RA will cast the net wide in search of talent, particularly looking at former Wallabies and All Blacks plying their trade for Japan either for the Invitational team, or the combined Indigenous-Pasifika team to play the Lions in Melbourne.

While Manu is not an All Black, he is a marketing machine who would add significant hype to either game.

Seems like the media just changed the narrative each day. Was only last week he was said to be hating living over there and not enjoying footy.

I don't think he's needed at the club unless Teddy goes down. We have plenty of outside backs for the year. Would just like to see him RWB again at some stage.

Surprising. He will rot away in that game. But I guess if it’s only about the money he’s happy .

My gut (and I can't ignore it these days) feeling is that Joey thinks it's time for a well paid holiday and have some fun enjoying life away from the melting pot.

I doubt if his heart will ever be back in to the NRL grind.

Was pretty much non existent once he announced he was leaving for Japan. I think at the price he would want its better for both parties to move on

All NRL clubs have to spend a minimum of 97.5% of their cap - there is no carryovers of unspent cap - not sure what happens with the remaining 2.5% if NRL Clubs only spend the minimum?

                  2025 - Base Salary Cap - $ 11,400,000 - Motor Vehicle Allowance - $100k ( 5 players x 20k each) - Veteran and Developed Player Allowance - $300k - Total Cap - $11,800,000

And winning 2 comps probably kills his desire to continue. It’s time to chase the big bucks.

Can you give half a million up front to Sam Walker if he agrees to add a couple more years to his recently extended contract?

Manu done nothing last year from the time he signed his rugby contract and got away with it because it was just a little working holiday in Japan before returning.
i feel he should refund his last years pay the cheeky bugger.
He was playing that bad he would have got dropped to Reggie's if he had signed a long term contract with rugby.

I’m happy to hear that Joey Manu will be staying in Rugby for big dollars abroad ,good luck to him..

I just hope we can all move on now and focus on the players that actually want to be at our Club and strive to win Premierships..

Good on him, at least we know where we stand and if Nick can do his thing and find a marquee signature for this year. Otherwise use the spare cash to front load some existing contracts to have more $$ for 2026 and beyond.
