Sure he is a nice buy. He is 7ft farking tall and looks like Superman. He still can't tackle.

On the other hand nobody can tackle him.

It's not that he can't physically tackle... it's that he gets caught outta position so is unable to get there for the said tackles.

This is partly because teams have opened up the middles, drawn in the back rowers / centres and created 2 or 3 on 1 situations with Young. Like a goalie he's gotta pick to dive left or right and 50% of the time he'll get it wrong.

Yes... a Brett Morris or similar (who's ~183cm and looks more like a rugged Aussie sheep shearer as opposed to Black Panther) will read 3 moves ahead, shout orders at his centre and shut down the opposition's scheming (rather than taking a 50:50 guess on the 5th tackle play).

HOWEVER (and this is important), Young scored a double in an otherwise lacklustre game where EVERYBODY (except maybe Connor Watson) looked like a leaky sieve looked p!ss poor in defence. I think that right now his defence is the LEAST of our problems, particularly when he's scoring exciting tries!!!

When our defence tightens up, Young will be unstoppable. It's not his job to make 50+ tackles a game. Yes it's lovely when a winger can read 3-4 plays ahead and secure their edge, but again... when a winger is forced into a 2-on-1 scenario, other things have other failed already. It's like blaming the 5th hull of the Titanic for it sinking... the ship was already farked by that stage and there weren't enough lifeboats to go around...

Great attacking player, very bad in defence. You can't drop him because he averages a try a game for us, if someone taught him how to defend even to an above average standard he'd be one of the best wingers in the comp.

Would you be happy if it was a bloke giving him a gobbie in Coles then?

he's a bit rocks and diamonds but he definitely has a plus side. d is obviously an issue but he knows how to find the try line. i don't think he's guaranteed a spot in our top 17 when billy gets back - marky to right wing is an option - but i think the positives outweigh the negatives. maybe the loss of rads on that side contributed to him losing his bearings in d

I remember in 2013 when Toops first really started to establish himself in the side and we all loved him for his aerial ability (sorry Wolfman) but he was really struggling with his yardage carries, often getting driven back.

In the offseason for 2014 he did a lot of work on his running style, working with SBW to emulate his technique in contact and he went on to have an even better 2014. Over the years he's gone on to improve his finishing, ball handling and defence to become one of the best wingers in the game.

I made a comment in the pre season thread that I was disappointed to see that Dom Young didn't show any improvement in the areas of his game that he struggled last year and that was rash decision making when he makes a line break, poor defensive decision making and his weak yardage carries.

Just to get into a top 30 NRL squad you need to have , that's a given. But it is attitude and commitment to self improvement that dictates how far you will go with that talent.

My concern is not Dom Young's ability but rather the lack of improvement he has shown in his time at the club so far.

Anyway coming a tad predictable these threads/posts for those that are not able to cope with adversity - sack the coach , get rid of this and that player and they are all reserve graders / super league players/park footy players blah blah blah - doom and gloom henny penny sky is falling

Adversity brings out the best and worst in people - those than can handle adversity tend not to worry and know that things will turn out okay vs Those that can't and struggle to cope with challenges, set backs or any difficult situations. - They need to Let It Be.

As Sir Paul McCartney Lyrics say in The Beatles Classic - Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
