  • Recruitment, Retention and Coaching

are the issues, and what we will reap this year is from it.

Blaming an individual player is only a symptom of this.

We will still have the odd fun moments this year, but not sustainable success.

That’s definitely part of it Jack. Whilst I am probably the last here to know, I finally heard why May was let go by a mate at Easts Leagues, after the game on Friday. What an absolute shitshow, makes me really think the club has bigger problems.

The team plays like it has for the last few seasons, like one that has never trained together and has met on game day.

The recruitment is so confusing. Our recruitment team seem to target the dumbest players in the NRL. Leniu and Young are two of the stupidest players I have seen in my life. We sign Chad Townsend and look to replace him with a 38 year old. What on earth is happening?

We have truly dropped the ball roster wise. It's embarrassing.

We play for premierships... in maybe 5 years time. Fingers crossed.

i've got a more positive take. we could easily have been 3 from 4 this year despite all the injuries we've had. we've defended pretty good the last 3 games but have been shit with ball in hand. hard to blame just the coaching staff, every individual needs to put their hand up. it's on everyone.
our roster this year is pretty good despite losing so many players. hard to dominate when you're missing your starting 9 and 7.

Recruitment and Retention is not only handled by those folk - The Coaching staff , CEO , The Board and especially the Chairperson Nick Politis are all heavily involved.

So any complaints about this can't be pinned on one person i.e Daniel Anderson Head of Recruitment or the Head Coach Trent Robinson.

'another one' as in another one from someone who doesn't jack off to pics of donald trump; or 'another one' from someone who is blind to how shit we've been playing?

People have had a good run these past 24 years - 8 GF's and 4 Premierships - could argue they could have won another 1 or 2 of those but that's the way it went

A GF appearance every 3 years

Previously from 1976 to 1999 - only 1 GF appearance in 1980 - 2020 was the next one 20 years later - 2002 was the first premiership in 27 years ( 1975 the previous one)

Would have been interesting if the Chookpen was around from 1976 to 1999. - 23 or 24 years of online meltdowns perhaps

GF Appearances since 2000 - Number - Last appearance and Number of Premierships won

                Storm - 9 - 2024 - 3
                Roosters - 8 - 2019- 4
                Penrith - 6 - 2024 - 5
                Broncos- 4 - 2023 - 2
                Manly - 4 - 2013 - 2
                Bulldogs - 3 - 2012 - 1
                Parramatta - 3 - 2022 - 0
                North Queensland - 2- 2015 - 1
                Warriors - 2 - 2011 - 0
                Souths - 2 - 2021 - 1
                Knights - 1 - 2001 - 1
                Dragons - 1 - 2010 - 1
                Tigers - 1 - 2005 - 1
                Sharks - 1 - 2016 - 1
                Raiders - 1 - 2019 - 0

                Titans/Various Gold Coast sides - 0
                Dolphins - new 2023 - 0

I just hope the rebuild is a lot quicker than the slow demolition which has been dragging on for a few years now

Injuries have compounded several seasons of poor retention and recruitment desicions, and the direction we are heading now is anyone's guess. I don't think we have hit rock bottom just yet.
it's time for some new ideas at the roosters

I’d like to thank fellow member Rooster_Mark for resurrecting this two-day old, unreplied thread.

Recruitment and retention is a difficult business. Predicting where a young player may end up whilst navigating the older more experienced players is tough.

Look at what Manly are experiencing right now. Or even our neighbours across the Avenue with the still performing Adam Reynolds and the now Dargon Lachlan Ilias.

The Chooks have to make the same calls, see Jacob Preston and Josh Curran for the Berries. The same tough calls for Latrell and Terrellrell

I mean, we could still be benefiting from the best recruitment guy in the business, Peter O’Sullivan, managing our rothster. If so, we could be the beneficiaries of Dylan ‘Bob’ Browns services for the next 10 years. Damn, missed out!

Mmm so you bagging the Chairperson, Nick Politis, now - he played a big part in signing both Spencer and Dom as well. He is very hands-on as far as recruitment and retention goes plus Brandon Smith as well.

Had fellow board member in Mark Bouris wine and dine him, Coach Robinson as well plus current and ex players convince him to sign.

Coaching - Robbo has won 3 comps and Holbrook is one of the more experienced assistant coaches in the comp having coached 168 games as head coach. I don't know how the old ex players go in coaching roles but Cooper Cronk was obviously one of the greatest halves ever, Boyd Cordner a former Australian and Origin captain, Matt King a former national team and Origin player and Jake Friend who played nearly 300 games and also played Australia/QLD. I don't think this is our issue.

Recruitment - I don't think we can fairly judge this right now. We recruited Robson who will likely be NSW hooker this year and could have that spot for the next 4-5 years, we're pursuing DCE who will likely be the QLD captain and halfback this year. I'd like to see us get a centre/winger and a good bench prop but DCE and Robson would be a case of good recruitment in my opinion. I also liked the signing of Townsend, obviously not as a first grader but if he was in NSW Cup like he's supposed to be he'd be a great mentor for our young NSW Cup players given his 250+ games, premiership win etc.

Retention - I think this is our biggest issue. I don't know what happened but Terrell May being here this year would be huge and Leniu, Whyte, Collins and May would be a very strong pack. I would've kept Luke Keary on for one last season as Sandon Smith clearly is not ready, Tupounuia could've remained as an impact bench player also. If those three players are retained then we are much more dangerous than we currently are and probably pick up an extra victory or two this season.

It's rather pointless because you wouldn't believe it anyway and secondly it was pretty innocuous, but the way it was handled by everyone involved was a complete shambles. What I will say is it had nothing to do with any supposed drug taking. May is well known to be a non drinker or drug taker.

Who cares who is involved? All concerned have been chasing their tails for the past few years. The big name signings have been busts, Brandon Smith spectacularly, Spencer might even turn out worse because of the monumentally stupid decision to upgrade his contract to $850K a year, based on a few runs off the fence against a horrible Dragons team. Dom is less of a surprise because so many Knights fans were willing to pack his bags the moment he signed for us.

Those guys all quoted have been doing all in their powers to sign a replacement for Keary to play alongside Walker. Firstly Hunt and now DCE. Sandon Smith was never seen as his partner, hence playing mostly off the bench previously.
