  • Radley's concussion issue

The guy is tough & brave as they come..but to what detriment is that to his future well being.

I'm no doctor but with all the info & advancement in brain trauma these days the question has to be asked how many more can he take.

6 failed HIA's in 3yrs & the way he lays there on the ground these days isnt a good look & might suggest his brain isnt responding that well anymore after each hit.

I read the club has attempted to tweak his tackling style but it doesn't seem to be working that well.

If he was my son I’d be begging him to retire.

I would have to assume he wasn't concussed last night as he came back on after passing his HIA - i know he's had a lot of legit concussions but i don't think last night was another one. He does seem to cop a hell of a lot of head knocks though and i have to assume they all add up in a negative way to some degree even if they are not clinically a concussion. He's so brave and that's why he's a great player but it's definitely not good for his health. Here's to hoping he can get some luck with the frequency of them and change his tackling style a bit to make that more likely.

He needs get his head in the right position. Wake up Radley before it's too late. Not every tackle has to be as hard as you can, just got to stop the play.

And he's probably never received a penalty for all the hits he's copped.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Why is it that the majority of players at risk (or have) of retirement from concussion are from the roosters.

Cordner, Friend, Keary and Radley. The only player from another team I can think of is Finucane

Cam Murray should be on that list but we all know Souths Care

Unfortunately he isn't a large man in the fafita, jwh, haas category and his effectiveness comes from his effort in hitting hard. It comes at a price of head knocks from the nrl clamping down on defenders hitting high and lowering their target area with the result defenders generally get the concussions not the ball carriers. Boyd and Friendy are 2 cases in point and I think Rads is 'heading' the same way at an earlier age.

Radley didn't get concussed last night. He seemed more shocked than anything else.

On the point of tweaking tackling style. How many shorter players like Radley and Friend have ended up suffering multiple concussions by having to adjust their tackling style? IMO NRL had already overreached in not distinguishing between a shoulder charge vs players protecting themselves by bracing. Forcing Radley to tackle lower and ending up with far more concussions than he would have caused is a further overreach. I understand the NRL are trying to protect themselves legally but it will surely backfire on them with smaller players being able to prove an increase in concussions.

It's time to tap him on the shoulder sadly, he's had probably just as much head knocks as Cordner and Friend which pushed them into early retirement for safety. Also Rads is unfortunately nowhere near as effective a player as he was a few years ago, and these days you'd be thinking it's hard for him to complete a game with even a slight knock to the head. Welfare first.

Too true, Lindsay's had a couple of head knocks as well.

I think for the good of both parties, he should walk away.

It’s not a coincidence when he’s going to the head bin every 2 weeks. He hasn’t recovered since he was targeted in the crack downs all those years ago now. Seems to be in 2 minds whenever he does anything now and is no longer effective.

Very interesting point....why is it so?

A possible explanation could be Radley like Cords & Friend imo are very upright tacklers...didn't bend the knees & get the head to the side enough.

Also Cords was just an upright kamikaze runner with the ball which didn't help him.
