  • Please explain.

This is a genuine question because I am really confused by the 6 again rule.

When I watch the mighty Roosters on TV there is the ding for 6 again and then the ref signals 6 again. Are these calls coming from the bunker? I have noticed that when the 6 again "ding" is heard the ref often looks left and right and then does the 6 again hand signal.

Is it my imagination? I did not think the bunker was allowed to make 6 again call.

I have only noticed the ding after the ref has waved 6 again.

The bunker has no authority over live play in that situation.

Could be looking left and right due to the touchie.

The officials won't admit it but, I reckon the ref gets coached by the bunker via their earpiece. Totally wrong, very artificial.

I agree - it’s just a feeling but it certainly seems that a fair amount of the calls are coming from the bunker but the ref would react the same way of the call was coming from the touchie so I’m not 100% sure if it’s coming from the touchie or the bunker but it appears often it’s not called by the ref directly but from a third party.

don't know about that but on balance the bunker is a good thing. it could be used more efficiently but, on balance, you don't get so many howlers

Of course the Bunker rules on six again situations as they can review ruck and 10 metre infringements decisions made by the on-field referee and and give the on-field referee a "heads up" on those they have missed - hence the delay sometimes in awarding the six again - i.e an infringement from a previous tackle.

                Covered by the following

The Bunker was introduced to provide a dedicated space for review officials to analyse game footage and make decisions, aiming to improve the accuracy and consistency of refereeing calls.

If what you are saying is right, for mine, that is not in the spirit of the game, especially a ruck after the event. It should be the ref only making these calls and if it's not, can you Captains challenge a six again?

Agree 100% - absolute circus. It becomes like dump and run touch footy.

They place players on report after the infringement.

IMO it's what ya do as a ref when you can't quantify a penalty but vibe our defence as involving shonky tactics. Evidence that this is going on can be as simple as the opposition going nowhere in attack because they s*ck and would be 50 behind on the scoreboard if they didn't keep getting constant leg-ups.

Often it's paired with refs spoon feeding our opposition with opportunities to not get penalties. Some are really vocal, like 'HEEEELD.... RELEEEEEASE... LET GOOOO!!' Finally they'll release us with a sheepish smirk, knowing they've gotten away with it a million times already and it's blown our momentum.

Last week the ref was like 'PENALTY' then when Teddy asked 'for what though' he said 'nah shaddup... your 5 seconds are up!!!' When questioned at half time (after using this tactic to defeat valid challenges twice and then getting a VERY generous bunker's agreement on a blatantly incorrect call) he asserted that it was a rare technicality, but he was in the right to not identify what sorta penalty he'd called until the time to contest it had passed. I saw nothing rare or technical about this, but ya gotta remember that 1/2 the refs are from the same family.

Nothing more than a game management tool allowing refs to make up shyt as they go along.

I don't think that is correct. According to the NRL's bunker rules, unless a try-scoring situation is referred to them, they can only intervene when foul play will result in a player being placed on report, sin-binned or sent off.
