The reason the best winger in the competition (as in, the player who made more metres in the entire comp in 2009 despite us getting the spoon and continues to be an on and off-field role model for all the younger players) is leaving, is this. He has had a major falling out with Brian Smith.

On the team bus, after the win over the Tigers, Sam Perrett announced to the team the reason he was leaving. It should be noted, Smith was not on the bus. It's not Smith's custom or practise to get too close to the players, so I am told.

Sam's speech went like this: "I love Easts and will be a Rooster for life, I love all of you blokes, but the reason I am leaving is this: the coach hates me, and I hate him!"

Sam was then greeted with spontaneous applause from the entire squad. And this news comes from an unquestionable source (ie. someone who was on the bus, and has told me this directly).

Horrible times at Bondi when a player who would have got to ten years next year, is forced out like this because of our "master" coach.

I don't think so, in fact he is not in the top 5 wingers in the NRL. No doubt he is a great role model off the field, but he is an average winger at best.

As far as the coach is concerned, would love Jason Taylor to take over, as I think he would do a great job.

Whether or not Sammy is the best winger in the comp is debatable, but he certainly is a high-value winger FunkyChicken... the ultimate cheque-book club in the game, Canterbury, don't sign up players like Sam Perrett to three year deals for no reason...

What are the chances of the Dogs winning a comp soon, compared to the odds of the Chooks winning one soon................ all of us need to ponder that one...

That debate aside, Funky, I agree with your point that JT might make a good first grade coacg.... I for one, would like to see Sticky get another crack at coaching Easts... I'd also love to see Bellamy here... but at the same time, my third choice would possibly be JT...

The only coach to get souffs to the finals in 30 years could do wonders for us...

SAM PERRETT is in the Roosters' bad books for a number of reasons - at the top of the list is he told the players in the side he was leaving the club before he told the coach. And chairman Nick Politis, who has done plenty for Perrett, was not given the courtesy of a call. The other issue is the Roosters asked Perrett some time ago to back off with his plans to leave in a hurry because the club was struggling with injuries. The real problem with Perrett going is the club wants his brother Lloyd to play years to come because he is a gun. Word is Perrett was looking for a $300,000-a-year deal

As I just said to FunkyChicken.... Sammy may not be the "best winger in the comp" but his stats are good enough for the Dogs to go after him and give him a three year deal...

Sammy is a VERY valuable player... no winger comes in at the start of every single set, and gets 15-20 metres out of dummy half for a team, the way Sammy does....

The amount of pressure a player like Perrett takes OFF the forward pack, cannot be underestimated...

As I just said to FunkyChicken.... Sammy may not be the "best winger in the comp" but his stats are good enough for the Dogs to go after him and give him a three year deal...

Sammy is a VERY valuable player... no winger comes in at the start of every single set, and gets 15-20 metres out of dummy half for a team, the way Sammy does....

Probably because most wingers are in the team to score tries.. His 40 in 8 years is very poor.

Timely and interesting little snippet of news there SC... it should also be noted that the same column today reports that Ricky Stuart is in hot demand by both Parra and Canberra... but that certain sections of the Board at Bondi Junction are keen as well...

My money is still on Stuart coaching us again from next year or 2014....

Its our playing style that gives him all those metres, its stupid football if u ask me no other team does it...way too may hit ups from our backline that amount to SFA. Our big boys need to start hitting the ball up and popping balls so our backling reap some rewards. Dont know if the 300k thing is true but if it is near that figure its laughable.

SC I have also said for years, that we still play the same basic "get out of trouble/metre-eating" football that we have played since the 90s. In some ways, all teams do this... but when I watch Easts play, I do think to myself, "haven't I seen this before"....

When the likes of Sammy, SKD, BJ etc, race out of dummy half and grab a quick 10-metres, I still see images of Jack Elsegood, Shane Rigon and Shannon Hegarty doing the same thing, week-in, week-out...

I must say, however, that in the NRL/News Ltd era of 1998-2011, this has been the type of football promoted by the NRL and its referees who now exercise more control over the game than any other officials in history.... for God's sake, the game is now orchestrated by those in control.... but that is another subject...

You're right. The reason is to secure his younger brother LLoyd for the same amount of time.
