  • Should Watson Be In The Halves?

So first, I totally acknowledge that Watson has probably been one of our best players this year at 9 and in an ideal world he could stay there until next year when Robson comes but our halves are the most dire halves combination I've ever seen and we urgently need anyone to replace them which is where Connor could come in.

My memory might be hazy so please correct me if I'm wrong but from memory Connor left the Roosters to go and play in the halves at the Knights, he played a season or two, found out he was a gun utility and stuck with that, regardless though he has the season or two of first grade experience in the halves and again, memory might be hazy but I don't remember him being a shockingly bad half like Sandon or Townsend.

Would a spine of Teddy, Watson, Townsend and Zack Dockar-Clay with Sandon Smith at 14 potentially change our fortunes around? I feel like if Watson was our primary playmaker last night we probably win the game.

I personally would just put young Jake Elliott in there. Or Hugo Savala.

I suggested this earlier Sandon to 7, Connor to 6, ZDC to 9.

No, for two reasons. First being that he's a very good dummy half at this point in his career where as I don't think he's a very good 5/8 so you're weakening the effectiveness of Watson and secondly I'd rather see Elliott or Savala in the starting side than Dockar-Clay.

Sandon Smith to 7 and Savala at 6, Keep them there until Walker gets back.

When Walker is back you remove either Sandon or Savala, based on who is playing the better.

                  Anyone but Chad.

Robbo will look like a fool if Townsend plays next round imo.

                    My 1 to 7

                    Teddy
                    Toops
                    B. Smith
                    Tioa
                    Marky Mark
                    S.Smith
                    Rodwell.

I reckon Savala will develop onto a ball playing Lock or a great bench utility.

Does Connor have a kicking game?

I would like to see Jake Elliot to get a crack bigger body and a natural footy player.. Maybe not against the Broncos. But Penrith are out of form at the moment and tbh I don't think they will make the top 4 this year now (after tipping them at Seasons start to make the gf). It might be worth a shot in 2 weeks with Jake.

I don't want to see Connor to always play in the halves until Sam returns, as he is predominantly a middle or utility and now has strengthened our spine with his performancss at 9. We will weaken the 9 to shore up 6. However perhaps against the Broncos it could be an option but ZDC doesn't fill me with confidence.

Is Victor back for the Broncos? Perhaps we can get away with him at 6 for the Broncos game and then Elliot for the Riff. But we won't have much of a kicking game against the Broncos with the Radley option.

Thinking long and hard about it Hugo has spent some time out in the nrl now. Not a lot but I would probably throw him in for the Broncos game. He does have a kicking game and his preferrsd position is 7. Connor or Victor probably don't a serviceable kicking game and Sandon is getting burnt playing with Chad.

I think Rodwell could be our future 6 as Sammy is our long-term 7. But I'm not sure he is anywhere near ready yet for the NRL...

Savala and Elliot are so versatile I can see them playing in a number of spots before locking down a position and with the amount of young talent emerging it may not end up being with us.....

Connor is best playing in the middle as a 13 or off the bench as 14. Dockar Clay played a lot at half for Norths cup side and was the Maori all stars half this year. If they dont use him there then they should try Savala. The other halves are still too young.
