  • We weren't THAT bad, things just didn't go our way...

After round 1 I was expecting cricket scores every week. Instead, we've won 1 game and been in the contest for every other game.

I don't wanna use the word 'luck' to explain our results (and defence certainly plays a part) but frankly, what were the major turning points last night? I think part of the frustration was that they were all non-events!!!

    1. Latrell absolutely butchered two 40/20 attempts, giving us plumb field position. Instead of taking an easy field goal or pinning them in their own end for a good spell (or both!!!) we did nothing. We did BS quality end of set kicks that gave Souffs a get out of gaol free ticket.

    2. If you're noticing a pattern... Latrell absolutely butchered a dropout as it didn't go close to 10. By some sheer miracle it JUST dribbled onto the line (I'm gonna assume because it didn't look any further than that) and somebody got to it as a result of tripping over his own shoe laces. It wasn't a master stroke... it was a botched kick that resulted in an absolute fluke!

    3. Teddy on the other hand farkin' nailed his kick-off, we got the ball back and the ref blew a dubious penalty. Game over.

    4. Teddy threw a game winning pass to Young and the ref blew his whistle to cry 'FORWARD!!!' before the pass had even been attempted. He loved denying that opportunity!!! Absolutely loved it... lives for that shyte.

    5. Souffs got possession due to another dubious penalty and then scored off a blatant forward pass.

    ---

My summary is that the game was shyte and so was the reffing. However Souffs were shyte enough (and injured enough!!!) that we shoulda had them on the ropes.

In fact we had them on the ropes but couldn't score for some reason. Why? I dunno. I really dunno how we start turning these opportunities into tries as SOME players are just on absolute beast mode. SOME players (e.g. Teddy, Crichton, Wong and Watson) run faaarkin 50m every time they touch the ball. However our last kick options go nowhere. Also there's no early kicks or variety. We just... GO NOWHERE!!!

One can blame Young's defence but he didn't let in that many tries. In fact, we scored more tries than Souffs and STILL lost because we didn't convert them!!!!

In summary we're not THAT bad. We're a surprisingly capable team that COULD be in the 8 if we'd held onto our dominance of the Wahs, Titans and Souffs. However, we shanked all 3 games as if they were Trell Mitt 40/20 attempts. Unfortunately after that, we didn't have a lucky drop-out somehow end up coming good after only going about 2m off the boot and bouncing all over the place, trying its best to avoid the 10m line (woulda touched it with a bees d!ck if at all!!!)

Will this luck come? NO! We need to improve and start capitalising on our unexpectedly okay form. How? IDK but as fans I think it's not as if the coach and team need to be sacked. We're close to drawing blood. We've just gotta keep searching for that weakness and trying new stuff. It's a frustrating season but IMO there are a lot of good signs. Can feel we're getting close!!!

PS - oi did anybody see Dutton's kick? LOLz... maybe we shoulda used that tactic of giving the target a falcon?

You must have gone on a long run today & are suffering heat exhaustion & not thinking straight.

So many wrong points.....just to name one...we didn't score more tries...it was 3 each.

Drop the players who constantly let us down..they have to starting with Young and Townsend..put Butcher on notice and Collins.

We couldn't score, because our 7 was rubbish....

Absolutely. That is how you get better.

And come out and say: " this is a re build year ". Simple. Don't bull tihs the fans.

Actually it would be great for the coach to ' once ' actually acknowledge the fans.

There is a lot to talk about from last night, but I really want to touch on how absolutely moronic this dropout rule is.
There is no reason to not do this. If you are ever forced into a dropout, you should always go short because there's probably a 40%-ish chance of getting the ball back. Maybe higher once players get better at it.

Watching Mitchell's horrendous kicks just dribble over the 10m is a bad look. Having to sit there and wait, and ensure you don't touch the ball like hot potato, but remain as close to it as possible - it's stupid.
I think it would much better if the kick receiving team could just grab the ball at any stage, where as the kicking team needs to wait for it to go the 10.

This would totally keep the short dropout option available, but stop those absurd examples that occur. Mitchell's second one was actually indefensible. There was no way for the kick receiving team to get the ball back with that horror bounce.

Man I get what you're saying and yeah some of the things you said are OK.

Just look at the 1st point you made, that's down to game management and the players not on the same page, working in sync or just being boneheads.

Our defence was a lot better and parts of our attack were decent. Still we're losing games we could easy have won with some discipline and working as a whole unit like Melb and the Riff of the past few years.
Seems to me we need to get back to fundamentals some of them we stuff up on too many times.

What about the one in the Merge Parra game today? Penalty right in front for a non-contestable drop out.

It's frigging weird ay!!! P!sses me off that such an awkward, unintentional play turned the game around (paired with a forward pass).

Sigh. Feeling so tired now. Gonna have an early night I reckon.
