  • Petula Clark did it better!

Can someone explain the downtown rule to me please? Or at least make an interpretation for Friday's bizarre ruling.

Here are two images from the game and the incident in question.

The first image shows Smith about to kick the ball. Watson is in front of him because he was the dummy half (where else could he be?)

The second image is the moment that Reece Witherspoon fields Smith's kick. There are plenty of other players in front of Watson (circled), so why was he singled out for the penalty?

Googled it after the incident. Attacking players can't go past the line of the play the ball until the kicked ball passes that line. Fair enough.

          Isn't the Dummy Half exempt?

Yeah, and he'd probably also have to be faster than Gout Gout to manage it. The first image shows that Watson would have had to change direction in order to run past the line of the play the ball. It's yet another non-sensical, arbitrary ruling that the refs ALWAYS seem to ping Easts for.

I prefer to call it a complete stuff up by the touchie or bunker.

I think you might be onto something there.

Does your reply indicate that you don't know the answer?

I saw at least two incidents of Broncos chasing a kick from a position in front of the kiccker……no penalty, of course.

                        Yup. Happens all the time.

Same arbitrary rulings against Easts such as not playing the ball correctly.

Is it too late for you to get your NRL refs ticket Carlos?

That’s the one that annoyed me the most. Was it the only play the ball in the entire match that was “incorrectly” played?

I think we both know the answer to that!
