  • Offical ANZAC Day Match Thread: Roosters v St George

There’s no fixture on the NRL calendar quite like Anzac Day. A day where footy meets remembrance and the spirit of the Anzacs is honoured with passion, pride and we hope a fierce performance.

Let’s carry that Anzac spirit into this game. I expect Teddy to lead by example and put in a man of the match performance.

Today is a day where the jersey means just that little bit more. From the pre-game Last Post to the first tackle, the weight of history should drive every player out there to give it their all.

Let’s rise to the occasion and deliver a performance worthy of the Anzac legacy. And remember one thing, it’s just a game of footy it ain’t war. That comparison would be disrespectful to the veterans who fought.

    Lest we forget.

    Kick-off 4pm.

    Go Roosters!

When some people call footy a 'war' they don't mean any disrespect to soldiers and our miltary.
There are 'culture wars', 'war or words' etc.

Same with 'heroes'...war heroes....then there are called (sporting) 'heroes'.

Fair enough, but I just don’t like when people refer to a football game as war.

no doubt the day's bigger than the game. the day is the anniversary of the landing at gallipoli but it's about remembering all our service people who have fought for the country. personally, i'm always overwhelmed by the tragedy on ww1's western front. lest we forget.

the day's bigger than the game but the game's as big a regular season game as there is and we need to give it everything we've got. defend, kick and complete our sets well and we'll give it a shot

Attended the Dawn Service in town and back home to see the sunrise.
            How lucky are we.

' They went with songs to the battle, they were young, straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.'

An excerpt of the poem For the Fallen by Lawrence Binyon from which the Anzac Ode comes.

My favourite day of the year. No other evokes the spirit of connection, unity, gratitude and what it means to be an Aussie.

Started today attending the local dawn service which is always done with reverence and style. The crowd gathers in the pre dawn dark as you hear the faint sounds of the marching band playing "Road to Gundagai " wending its way to Charles Mance Reserve to signal the commencement of the ceremony. The highlight was probably two young people (very early teens) from Hilltop School speaking with a maturity and understanding that belied their youth. We are in good hands.

I'll watch some of the march on TV, play some old war songs and then head into town for the big game. Soak it all up.

The game itself is almost second fiddle to the occasion that is Anzac Day. But it is such a privilege for the guys to play in it and be a part. What a thrill for the first timers like Rob, Mark N, Hugo, Zach, Solesi and Blake.

However you choose to mark your Anzac Day and our beloved footy team, spare a thought that we are doing what we are on this day thanks to those who made, in some cases, the ultimate sacrifice. There can be no greater gift.

              Lest We Forget.

All the best to the mighty Roosters today.

Let's cut out letting in pathetic tries. It is time for Angus and Spencer to turn in blinders today.

And please, NO pre game interviews with the coach or Teddy. dribble dribble dribble

                Come on Chooks.

This is such a special day.

Anzac Day has always been special in my family. My grandfather fought in France during WW1, and was gassed on the front line by the Germans. He survived, but was never a well man afterwards, and died relatively young as a result. I’m sure there are many people who have similar stories in their family.

I also work with many ex-military servicemen, and you can’t help but absorb some of the sense of occasion that they feel today. It means a lot to all of them.

By far the most emotive and sacrosanct day on the Rugby League calendar. For the Roosters, this was Jared’s day for a long time. He loved representing his own father who served in the NZ military. I’m keen to see who’s going to stand up and lead us today.

                    Lest We Forget.

Myself and family came do to see Sydney’s Anzac service and game. This mornings service did not disappoint. No food to be found so off to Bondi for brekky and a picture of Arties and co painting. I will be out the middle at half time tossing heads or tails to win a car. What a buzz.goRoosters

                          Indeed.
In a cool, calm, rational and measured manner.
Making effective tackles, not in the head like two we did against the Panthers, giving away penalties.
Getting 'crazy' aggro like the Dogs did last night only leads to disaster.
Sitili got all fired up, never seen him like that before.
                          Finished up in the bin.
Then lifted his knee high in a tackle, hitting the defender in the neck as he was falling.
Then a group of Dogs players were roughing up a Broncos player in a tackle, penalty.

Yep, lots of service on both sides of my family too and the in-laws. I also worked with servicemen and women for many years as did the other half for even longer. The sound of The Last Post playing is always an emotional occasion for me. The Roosters are very lucky and privileged to be a part of this very special game and occasion
