Incoming Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith says Phil Gould will not be coach
    By Andrew Webster
July 24, 2009 Incoming Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith has buried the notion he will be a puppet for Phil Gould next year with one sharp remark: "I can assure you I will be coaching the Roosters - Phil Gould won't be."

Smith has also told controversial forward Willie Mason he is free to leave whenever he wants.

"If Willie decided he was moving on, I wouldn't be feeling like there was a massive hole there or I didn't want to coach because I'd lost a big-time player," he said.

Smith remains firmly focused on leading Newcastle Knights to a premiership despite the announcement on Monday of his shock departure.

Newcastle play Manly at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford on Friday night. But murmurs continue about his imminent arrival at Bondi Junction and his relationship with Gould.

Many believe the former Roosters coach advised chairman Nick Politis to entice Smith to the club.

His praise of Smith over the years has been effusive, and more so since his appointment.

"A coup," is how he described Smith's signing. Yet Smith insists they are acquaintances at best and will not be influenced by Gould.

"We're not enemies, but we're definitely not close friends either," he said. "I can assure you I will be coaching the Roosters Phil Gould won't be. He will not be.

"I would like to think I'll bounce ideas off him, as I've done when I've been at other clubs. I know he has some great friendships with the chairman and with other people associated with the Roosters. (But) if my views about where we are heading or not are different to his ... well, they'll be different to his."

Smith was also blunt about Mason's future in the tri-colour jumper. The former representative star has regularly denied he wants an early release to accept a lucrative deal playing rugby in Japan.

Behind the scenes, some Roosters officials say they want him gone because he is divisive influence.

"My understanding is Willie is considering all options at the moment," Smith said.

"And my only comment to Mr Politis and Steve Noyce was it would not faze me one way or the other (if Mason left).

"If Willie decided he was moving on, I wouldn't be feeling like there was a massive hole there or I didn't want to coach because I'd lost a big-time player."

Following the Roosters' loss to the Warriors last Sunday, it was noted how glowing Mason was in his praise of his incoming coach.

"I've only had him once and that was a quick camp and we got beat," said Mason, who played under Smith for Country Origin in 2003.

"But he has always been pretty positive towards me. I think when he was at Parramatta and I was at the Dogs, he'd always shake hands with me after a game and say, 'Well done', or earlier this year after the Knights flogged us, he said, 'Keep your head up and things will turn around'."

But other Roosters players will be pleased to know that Smith does not intend to make the same sweeping changes next year as he did in his first season at the Knights.

"For next year, most of those guys have been told what their status is and most of them are on longer-term deals and young enough to make me excited about prospects of dealing with a young team," he said.

Smithy pushing Willie out the door

    Love it

No Over Priced Dud Buys with Smithy on board

We will be competitive again in no time

As I have said for ages winning a gf is all about getting value for money out of your squad

I like the sound of that.

whilst i know the media would have baited him into talking about willie, i really think its pretty average for the new coach to already be being blase about players. maybe its honesty, but to me it doesnt create a great environment when a coach says i don't care if you're here or not

As much as the Tel-U-crap would love to tell us that Smith wants Willie out, the article doesnt say anything of teh sort. All its says is if Willie wants to go, he is free/ if he chooses to stay then thats fine. The same would apply to any player...why would Smith or any coach want a player to stay if that player didnt want to play for the Roosters?

Ist not even a newsworthy topic.

And for the record, Willie Mason at his best is the most damaging back rower the game has seen for the past decade. Once he recovers fully from his knee he will be invaluable to us. He is already starting to dominate as he gets more confidence.

Willie Mason is a key forward and an asset to any club, when he's fully fit and firing. Smith can get the best out of him, and i think we'll see Willie staying and playing his best season next year.

        Id make him Skipper too.

So why didn't he dominate last season?

He had 2 very good games early last season and that was it

If you get paid big bikkies out of the cap you should performing at a high level consistently.

Willie has been an epic fail in this regard.

New club, shit coach using him as a battering ram instead of a wide running back rower that leaves backline defenses in tatters. he carried several injuries into last year, and the a little thing called Knee injury ended it.

Hes a Rooster now...support him. Pure hatred for an EX Bulldog doesnt cut it. Smith will get the best out of him. Smith wont use him as a prop, and will use him to bust lines out wide and promote 2nd phase play, something our Easts men have had no clue about for 5 years. Second phase play is something this current squad has never experienced.

I reckon the best from Willie is yet to come. He is at the exact correct age to peak as a player. If anyone can make him rise to great heights its Smith, and the respect that Smith has for Mason's ability. You wont read about that in the Tel-U-crap.

Unless Japanese Yawnion come up with the big bucks the Roosters are stuck with the deadshit for another year as no one else will come close to paying him what we do.

But under Smith, he'll have to do more than talk the talk, he'll have to actually put his words into actions and perform on the field. Smith won't take the sub par performances Fittler did, he'll be playing for the Jets before he knows it.

The party's over, it'll be hard yakka for the Roosters squad in 2010. It'll be interesting to see if Mason's up to the challenge or whether he takes the easy way out, or is forced out.

Mason's always been a bloke who's doesn't like being dictated to, so he and Smith could lock horns pretty early on in the piece.

We have far cheaper and younger versions of wide running, tackle busting, ball playing 2nd rowers in Cherrington and Sa (we don't need Willie 400k or more out of our cap) We will also have Waera Hargreaves and Boyd Cordner coming through who have similar capabilities as well.

IMHO Willie is a waste of cap space pure and simple

I remember seeing an interview on ESPN with Willie after the game he got injured last year when he said "he would comeback 10 times the player this season". He is nothing but talk which a great example to set to the younger players NOT

He's been quite solid this year despite coming back from serious injury. There are players that deserve the boot before Mason, that's for sure.

I agree. He's getting better for sure.

My concern with him is his off field influence. Is he the right bloke to have around the club when you are trying to change the culture and attitude of the players.

You know whats wrong with us? We are over rating 17 year old juniors. Warea Hargreaves and ****ing Cordner have done nothing to suggest they will be successful at NRl level. You compare them with someone like Mason who has played and excelled at the highest levels of teh game?

Wake up. Our under20s are nothing at the moment. Figments of young teeny chook fans imaginations.

If there isnt a cleanout of at least half those useless young dickheads, and if the rest arent re-programmed, they will continue being zeros.

I can understand hatred for Mason's former club, but for ****s sake, even Finch the biggest retard the game has ever seen, was given 3 years of benefit of doubt.

Mason and Myles re both ex Bulldogs. And they are the best forwards we have on our roster going into 2010. You cant deny, dispute or argue that fact. better than any ball dropping incorrect ball playing coconuts.

Until Cherrington and Sa show me the line braking ability Mason already has shown me, then youre full of crap my friend. They too have the abuility I believe, but you cant compare their efforts to date with Mason';s results. Let your bias slip away and see the truth for once. Otherwise, just say, im a biased **** and hate Mason regardless. At least Novice Chook made her stand and called it. If you hate him the say so. Dont mask hatred behind bullshit.

Mason has to be kept. He is slowly getting better each week and is starting to show bring his A game again. I don't really understand why people get on his back when he is trying to lift the team each week. We need him at the club because he will be firing soon, and we need him to be doing that for us and not against us.

Mate I agree most probably 75% of our Under 20's are not up to scratch and only about 5 or 6 deserve to be kept.

JWH has played 3 or 4 games for Manly and if you cannot see that he has enormous potential then I'm sorry your no judge of a footballer. Cordner from the little I have seen is going to be excellent in a few years time.

As for linebreaks Mason has made 3 in 647 minutes in 10 games or 121 runs

Thats 1 line break every 215.66 minutes or 40.33 runs

Compared with Cherrington 1 linebreak in 181 minutes in 4 games or 32 runs

My argument is based on facts not a biased hate for the bloke

Your comparisons are based on vague memories of Willies 2004 form which are not likely to comeback in the twilight of his career.
