  • Sign a Superstar, Sack a Coach

The good old tried and tested formula for occasional short term success and long-term failure. This must be the Vision statement at the top of the Roosters Strategic-Business Plan.

    Will we ever learn?

This creates the culture and shapes the results – on and off the field.

I have been a long-time critic of our policy of changing coaches as soon as times get tough. The quick fix. At the end of 2009 we needed a strong, experienced coach on a longer term contract who would instil discipline and not take rubbish. We got him. Took us to a Grand Final in the first year, rails fell off in 2011, got rid of the rubbish and finished year strongly and started 2012 similarly. There has also been a significant reduction in the off-field dramas and headlines for the wrong reasons – tick again, job done.

Mid 2012 things unravelling again. And, yet again, I point the finger at our upper level management. Players being given verbal “guarantees” about their position in the team from the Chairman. Big money being offered to sign a “sportsman” from another code, granting him his every wish, shedding our own players in the wake to accommodate him.
How can a coach and his players be expected to operate effectively and focus on building a winning culture for the club in this environment? Simple answer, they cannot.

The SBW circus has begun to affect our club even before it has even been announced officially – big time. What sort of message is this one-year, bend over backwards deal sending to other players in the club? Yes Smithy is a tough disciplinarian which some of the players do not like. Well they like it even less when management is giving the red carpet treatment to one new player.

It is so easy to blame one person or group – i.e. the coaching staff when things are going bad. It’s just a simple cop-out. Has the game left behind the more experienced coaches like Smith, Bennett and Sheens?…it’s possible, but it’s not what lies at the heart of our problems.

Nick I think it’s time to step aside. Yes we do need to re-build, but this time from the top of the tree.

    Bring back Easts.

    I believe the term is:

    Rebuilding from the foundation, up.

Because who starts rebuilding at the top?

But I totally see your arguement and I agree

Very well said mate. So refreshing to see someone post something and tell it like it is.

Im sick and tired of all these ultra-positive morons who dribble on about how a one year SBW deal IS BENIFICAL TO OUR CLUB/JUNIORS. What a crock of SHIT. It only benifits SBW.

This club is going backwards and im sick of it.

Rebulding, youth policy is all rubbish. Why are we rebuilding, we've been around for over 100 years! It's not as if the club and it's players were hit by a bomb or something. We cannot attract players to our failing club. Our management, coach, the dictator are all a bunch of jokes.
And anyone who thinks the club gives a crap about us fans has rocks in their head!!

You're on to something, Fred. Furner is in his 4th year at Canberra and they are 4th last, Cleary in his first year at Penrith and they are equal bottom...

SIGN BRIAN SMITH FOR 16 YEARS!

Jack I hear what you're saying and I agree. But it's too late. Our club is about to take the soft option again. Sack the scapegoat (coach), sign a big name player to a ludicrous deal (1 year with boxing and Japanese off season on the side!!) and tell the players everything is fine, if you spill your lollies we'll clean it up for you and buy you some new ones. It's embarrassing and the reason other clubs and supporters laugh at us. So Nick has signed SBW to this one year deal. Has he appointed a coach yet for 2013? if Smith is gone then I hope his replacement is happy with the SBW 12 month circus that's about to come to town.

What makes you think our club can't attract players? They're obviously investing time in the players coming through instead of going for the quick fix in the past. Obviously SBW is an exception. I agree with the original post in terms of the coach, but I'm keen for SBW to come here. He's an exceptional talent, and was one of the best in the comp. With the lack of experience players, SBW has the potential to make significant impact on our team. Unlike mason contract we won't be stuck with him for yrs and if it works out we can succeed from it, in the process we don't lose any one. I think its a win win for the club.

Good post Jack. And I agree, the instability that Nick 'sometimes' brings to club decisions needs to be reviewed independently. The real problem is no one can get onto the Football board of even buy a voting right for our football club as it's a closed shop. I know because I've asked. Chook to club staffer "How do I apply for a voting right within the Roosters to elect our chairman and board etc"...Roosters staffer "no such thing exists".

And I'd say the only way you'd change that is through rally of Rooster fans in front of RHQ. And even then you'd have to generate enough rukus to warrant the media picking it up or Nick will take absolutely no notice, we all know how he hates bad press. But I doubt it would take much to goad Alcho Cheeks into covering it if he thought it would hurt Politis.

                        Chook.

I can't believe so many people on this forum know of the goings on in our club.
Just from this forum I know as FACT that Smith won't be here next year and SBW won't be here in 2014. I'm pretty sure somewhere along the line there was FACT that Mini was definately not going to be here next year too.
We must have a mole in the board room.

Fatty mentioned on the radio this morning that he interviewed Hasler a couple of years ago and asked him if he could sign one player outside of his own club who would it be. He said SBW. So many think he is the best coach in the game. Does anybody think of the positives SBW can bring to the club? He is a clean skin (apart from what he did with you know who at you know where but kudos to him). He is a world sports superstar. He is a supreme athlete. He will bring crowds in. We will probably be shown on free to air more often and bring in more sponsorship. Most importantly, he is an X-factor which we currently don't have and desperately need.

I would prefer it was longer than one year but do we really know that as fact? Would Nick work on getting him to the club probably over the last 12 months and clear out a few players just for one year? Maybe it is a year to year basis to see what happens with the salary cap. Who really knows and who really cares? Some worry about the affect he will have on our youth. Do you think that it will be similar to Mason, Watts, Myles and Carney? I think our youth could take plenty of positives him being around even if just for the one season. Imagine training with the guy every week and all the positive vibes compared to the 4 drongos I mentioned.

In 12 months I'm sure most of the doomsayers will be on the bandwagon saying how much difference he has made to the club. Even if it is only for 12 months, I'm sure the players would benefit plenty from him. Plenty didn't want Carney yet in one year he almost won us a comp. So if SBW gets us to a GF in one year and leaves I would be one happy chook.

I have been 50/50 about him coming but I have been converted. I say bring him on. He is worth the risk.

EDIT: Hey fred68 can you tell us the percentage of players who hate SBW?

The year 2013 marks the beginning of the Roosters next 'decade of excellence', and it will prove to be more successful than the last!

                            Here's looking at you, kid.

Fittler was reportedly on one million a season in the mid 90's , so the same money for SBW now isnt too bad for an elite athlete that doesn't drink or smoke and trains the house down. His ability to offload in a tackle is freakish so there won't be a shortage of opportunities and is a good defender. The example he will set for the younger players as a senior member of the team will be second to none.
On the one year deal ( if true ) it gives both sides an out if things don't work out.
