  • Pearce on Smith's watch

I've had enough of this crap.

Pearce was one of the game's most promising half-backs in 2008, when the Roosters made the top four.

He used to break the line regularly, take intercepts, get repeat sets of six with a clever short-kicking game, and was the fastest in the club over 40 metres.

Think back even to 2007 and that pass from Wingy at Penrith Park, and the speed and skill shown by an enthusiastic young Pearce. While we didn't cover ourselves in glory in the 2008 finals, Pearce had a great year for such a young halfback.

What has happened to the player some Roosters fans called "Superboy" in the intervening years.

Coach Smith decided he needed to bulk up, put on the kgs, so he would become the "New Joey". Even in the last couple of weeks, this drooling idiot we have as a coach was saying how Pearce is about to "dominate" like the "new Joey".

Ahh, last thing I recall, is that the "Old Joey" hates Smith's guts, and was happy Sonny Bill smashed his head and neck into retirement, so he would no longer have to play under Mister Psychobabble Textathon.

Roosters fans... tonight was a classic example of what has happened overall to Pearce's game under Smith... despite the faith Stuart has shown in keeping him in the Origin team, let's be totally honest.

Pearce was rubbish, nowhere near Origin class. Peter Wallace is a much more Origin class halfback than the imposter we saw out there tonight. I can no longer defend the indefensible.

You can only look terrified for so long in the face of on-coming defence, you can only throw the inside pass so many times (as quickly as possible) and you can only kick down the throat of Queensland defenders, without ever once having positioned yourself or planned when you want to receive the football to kick it on the last...

You can only for so long let the classy number 9 do all the playmaking, or let the brilliant yet not-playmaking number 6 do all the line-breaking stuff...

Tonight Pearce unfortunately showed that he is not a representative class player, and with a heavy heart, I have to say his club form is very questionable these days.

St George or Balmain can have him I now reckon.

PS - oh and Smith is not off the hook either. While it's too late to save Pearce whose career has been ruined, it's not too late to save the entire rest of the Roosters squad, by dispensing with the current coaching staff and starting afresh.

Laughing at you guys blaming Smith for everything. Pearce just doesn't have the right instincts and vision to be a playmaker. It's always been his problem. You either have it you don't. It can't be coached. Nothing to do with Brian Smith.

          I agree with you.
But in saying this, I do believe Pearce could progress more under a different coach.
Compared to Cronk last night, Pearce looked like a Bondi United player.
But......the guy roots pussy cat dolls! So hats off to him!!

He started the season well had 5 good games in a row and one or two after that but fizzed out ...obviously the partying is catching up .Thats the coachs problem when players drink it up etc dont play anymore -its all over the change has to happen again across the board

The good ol' "Pearce has promise/potential" call...

Have been hearing that for 6 years. He's yet to deliver on any of it.

He is an above average league player and a very average halfback. He is never going to be anything other than that.

                  Maybe's he's a hooker.

                  Maybe he's a centre.

Maybe he's the lock we need.

Big LOL at blaming Smith for Pearce being an over-rated player. He is an above average first grader. He would not be the NSW first choice half back if we had a few more decent options. Your man Stuart has hardly done anything to help his progression either. I see he WAS the NSW coach last night wasn't he? Pearce played the way he always plays. He's just not as great as some people think he is.

Laughing at you guys for constantly defending Smiffy for EVERYTHING!! Vision, instincts and I will add kicking for a playmaker can most definitely be coached which then has plenty to do with Smiffy!!!!!!

Just look at Kris Keating and Josh Reynolds at the dogs. Keating has always been a rubbish player until this year when he is now finally being coached properly by 1 of the 2 best coaches in the comp! Reynolds has come from absolutely no where to now being a very good player, ALL because he is now being properly coached! Guess what?????? Both players are THE SAME AGE as Pearce!!!!!!! Hasler has done this with 2 playmakers in a matter of months, Smiffy is into his 3rd year and Pearce is not progressing!!

I would f**king love to see what Pearce would be like under 1 of the 2 best coaches in the NRL, Bellamy or Hasler!
                            I admit that Pearce was a major disappointment last night but I will say 2 things in his defense;
1} He has had no decent coaching in his time at the Roosters!
2} Last night was as tough as rugby league gets!! Pearce is up against the greatest era of QLD, and to play them at Suncorp is the greatest challenge you can face as a league player, it is NOT easy! What also did not help was how the QLD defensive line was sprinting up for the full 80mins, giving him very little room to move in. To me it seemed that QLD were offside for most of the game and that their 10 meters was shorter than NSW's. I noticed it when looking for it through the game that QLD were being taken back exactly 10 meters and NSW were being taken back 13 meters. This really does not help a playmaker, especially when it helps QLD with field position and it seemed like they had more possession.

To me the answer for the Roosters is to finally get a bloody good coaching set up and see what they can do with Pearce. Cause really what is the alternative, Cronk is locked in at the Storm until the end of 2016(unless he has a clause in his contract about if Bellamy leaves), Thurston is 29 and locked up at the cowgirls until the end of 2013 (to old to get then), Cherry Evans is locked up til the end of 2015 and Shaun Johnson is locked up til the end of 2014. They are the only 4 players I rate higher then Pearce at halfback. What other alternative is there, other than to try and get the next big thing aged 17/18 and try your luck again there?
The year 2013 marks the beginning of the Roosters next 'decade of excellence', and it will prove to be more successful than the last!

                            Here's looking at you, kid.

My better half watched the first half with me last night.
She knows nothing about league but made the observation "Why is the no.7 always kicking it straight to the opposition's players?"

It was that obvious, apparently, that a footy hating woman picked up on it very quickly.

Welcome to the life of a Rooster fan :/
