    Smith: "Three of those nine penalties were the result of bad discipline. The others were in the other bucket."

    Here is an updated table outlining the penalty statistics for NRL clubs over the last 5 years. Unfortunately, I don't have the "tries following penalties" stat. That would show how much referees determine who wins and who loses in this stupid game.

    If that is that is as close as coach smith will go to questioning the treatment of the Roosters at the hands of the refs then nothing will change. 52 mins and 38 seconds of perfection from the sharks and then another 27 mins and 22 seconds of being close to perfect - amazing.

    Those stats of yours Spirit tell me that the league is doing its very best to get the sharks and rabbits home and keep the Roosters (and panthers to a lesser degree) in the mire.

      it also proves that it has nothing to do with the quality of the team - the top penalty receivers have all been horrible performers over the past 5 years which is ironic - wouldnt you think that if you are a crap team you would be illdisciplined....

          It also should show that in that pass five years, the following has happenned;

          1. The Roosters have had three different Coaches (Anderson, Fittler, and Smith);
          2. The playing Roster has changed immensly; and
          3. The introduction of two Referee's and Rule changes every year.

          So tell me do you all still think it is the Coach and Players who are at fault most of the time for the amount of Penalties we recieve? Cause I find it a strange co-incidence that players who make it through to our first grade team and even brought from other clubs are really all ill-discipline and have never played the game in the style that is required for first grade.

          C'mon, of course the Referee's plan it at the start on who should win the game!!!

              What about when BJ was blatantly stripped of the ball in a 3 man tackle and it was ruled a knock on. Fairly obvious proof they were only refereeing one side.

                The only penalty I thought wasn't legitimate was the one against Mose in the first half. The rest of the decisions could easily be justified, its just that there were other instances in the game when the same offence would go unpunished. For example, I'm sure that the ref's bosses can make a case for the 2nd penalty against Mose, and all the penalties against JWH. Its so frustrating being a Roosters fan at the moment....dropped balls, constant canings in the penalties.

                  And in case you were thinking that this was just a recent phenomenon, only once since 2000 have we finished a season with more penalties than we have conceded. Any reasonable person would say that over a 13 year period, a team could expect to finish with a penalty surplus more than once. Souths, for example, have had a penalty surplus 7 times in the last 10 years. Amazingly, Parramatta have not a penalty deficit ANY of the last 13 years.

                  The following outlines the penalty stats since 2000. The first column is the net season penalty differential for the Roosters; the second is the worst differential for that year; and the third is the second worst differential for that year:

                  Year.....Easts.....Worst.....2nd Worst
                  2011.....-17........-29........-21
                  2010.....-46........-46........-27
                  2009.....-50........-50........-27
                  2008.....-37........-46........-37
                  2007........0........-38........-36
                  2006.....-19........-28........-25
                  2005......-5.........-49........-22
                  2004.....+28........-37........-37
                  2003......-3.........-30........-23
                  2002......-2.........-54........-33
                  2001......-5.........-27........-23
                  2000......-9.........-34........-26
