Peter Williams: Good riddance SBW, don't come back

So Sonny Bill says he's going to play in the NRL because he made a handshake deal with some un-named person a few years ago that he would come back and play rugby league.

He says he wants to honour that handshake deal because he wants to keep " his word".

Then he reckons it's a pity he's leaving us, because he was really enjoying the Chiefs, going well in the team and it would be a real wrench to leave.

    What nonsense.

Does this guy think we'll think he's a genuine guy, because he's honouring a handshake deal? Keeping his "word"?

What about the actual contracts he's walked out in the last few years? The Bulldogs, Toulon and now the NZRU, for whom I was under the impression he was supposed to be on the payroll till the end of the year.

    Keeping his word? Piffle.

He's nothing but an immoral, money-grabbing, and dishonorable piece of work, being manipulated by an appallingly greedy management team that have been way, way too clever for the naive coaches and administrators from New Zealand rugby.

I don't know which is more galling - to see the considerable investment that New Zealand rugby has put into this guy not reach its full potential, or the way the NZRU and Chiefs people have put on smiley faces as their investment goes off to that powerhouse of powder puff rugby, Panasonic, and wish him well with not even a mild complaint about his behaviour.

I'm old fashioned - a deal is a deal. He was supposed to play here till the end of the year, so he's broken that deal, for money and nothing else.

New Zealand Rugby is a soft touch when the bully boys come negotiating. It lies down and takes it.

It can't even enforce a deal to get him to play a few meaningful Test matches against the Wallabies and the Springboks.

The prospect of Sonny Bill Williams playing rugby in New Zealand again must be resisted at all costs. We want players for whom the game means something more than a way to make money - I think they actually go better on the field.

Williams will be remembered as a player for whom the game couldn't do enough. Frankly, he didn't do much in return.

He was an All Black before he deserved to be. He played four decent tests - one against Scotland in 2010 and three against Ireland this year. Oh, and I suppose you can say he went pretty well in those training runs against Japan and Canada at the World Cup.

He was never a factor in a test match that really mattered.

He had the chance to be one of the greats - he's blown it.

I now don't care about his future. I just don't want him around these parts again.

NZSONNY BILL WILLIAMS: "If I ever came back to New Zealand rugby I would definitely be a Chief. Even if there was no money here I'd come and play for free.''Relevant offersThere is a sanctimonious tone to the criticism of Sonny Bill Williams.

The public reaction to his decision to play in Japan then return to the NRL has highlighted how blinkered many people are when it comes to the All Blacks.

Yes, it's important, but it is not exclusive.

Becoming an All Black is not a life sentence. It is not a cult.

Williams, like every professional, has his reasons and should not have to justify them to all and sundry.

Jerome Kaino headed to Japan in his prime to secure his young family's future and prolong his body's ability to cope with the rigours of professional rugby.

Williams says the money was simply too big to ignore in Japan, and that he'd given someone his word he would play rugby league next year.

Why the bitterness to one, but not the other?

It seems the stigma of walking out on the Bulldogs mid-season 2008 has stuck and that's fair enough to a degree, but Williams has never come across as the dishonest or deceptive type.

He has expressed a desire to return to the All Blacks if good enough and there's no reason to think he could not.

But with Williams it seems a different set of judgments are applied. He is painted in some quarters as a money-hungry mercenary.

Has anybody considered he might just miss playing rugby league? It's a popular sport. Brad Thorn missed it enough to go back for a stint with the Brisbane Broncos.

And will there be such an uproar if, and when, Richie McCaw or Dan Carter take sabbaticals to play overseas before the next World Cup?

It seems being different equates to dividing opinion in New Zealand. Williams' manager Khoder Nasser's job is to maximise his clients' market value and in that he is doing a sterling job.

SBW is a brand like few others.

Unlike most of us he has a myriad of exciting doors to choose from and the speculation that surrounds his career ensures they are rarely locked.

The job description reads: lucrative overseas job in exciting and challenging new field of work. One year, no strings, and you go with your former employer's blessing.

How many in their mid-20s would turn such opportunities down?

Professional sports is a week-by-week profession. Just ask Williams' Chiefs midfield partner Richard Kahui how certain he feels about his future in the game.

For those who say Williams' won't have a legacy, nonsense.

A sportsman's legacy comes down to the sum of their achievements.

Ad Feedback WHAT if Williams wins the Super Rugby title in a few weeks time, a second NRL title, a few tests for the Kiwis, returns to bag a second Rugby World Cup as a senior All Black and knocks out a few boxers along the way?

Only time will tell, but it would be a near-unrivalled legacy.

And for those wondering why the NZRU has sent him off with a friendly hug, isn't it obvious?

He's been a walking publicity machine for rugby union since he arrived in Christchurch.

And as a bonus he's played the house down.

If he comes back, the NZRU is in a position to simply turn the tap back on. Why would it jeopardise that now?

Their only real concern is that many of us, probably plenty of the knockers included, will be tuning in to a few Roosters matches next season.

Bollocks!! If he didn't want to be here he wouldn't be here. The "handshake commitent" coment is simply spinning his outgoing message to NZRU to make it sound a little softer - he may need to earn money from that crowd in the future - the word for this is professionalism.

SBW is a professional footballer who is coming to the Chooks to play footy for money. We just need to hope that he earns his money but his record in rugby so far suggests that he will.

Sonny is officially the most talked about contentious self-entity involved in Australian sport, or soon to be involved. The money the Roosters are paying for him is peanuts in what revenue he brings. It's just too good of an opportunity to miss out on.
