I think he was killed in the off season after this. In a car accident I think. Poor kid.

On another note, amazing how many white men are on the field.

You are correct BP we signed him from the Steelers he was a rising star and a good goal kicker and a great defender sad loss.

James Matthews was unfortunately killed in a car accident in the off season. He was a really good up and coming centre[ i think we got him from Illawarra] and was cut down in his prime.

The club still presents an annual award to the clubman of the year in his honour.

I think they even bring James' parents to the award night each year to present that award.

It was tragic - terrific kid by all accounts who just loved his footy.

And Jarryd Hayne's dad was playing in that game too.

Made me think how some players I regarded as ordinary in that day werent too bad at all....e.g. Protheroe. Bruce Sinclair was pretty underrated could really hit in defence too.

The days when referees kept quiet....bliss.

When I was at the club a few years ago he was walking around with a pair of pliers.

Those were the days, sitting in the stands with my grandpa bagging poor Brendan after he misses yet another conversion from right in front of the posts.
