  • Roosters forward Martin Kennedy forced to remove tweet aimed at South Sydney Rabbitoh

    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/nr...-1226426241216

IT was intended to be tongue-in-cheek, but Sydney Roosters forward Martin Kennedy has been forced to remove an offensive Twitter image aimed at arch-rivals South Sydney.

In a move to heighten hostilities tomorrow night at Allianz Stadium, Kennedy posted a tweet last Friday reading: "Only in Redfern @ down the rabbit's warren".

The image attached was a digitally-altered "Church of Redfern", where the message being preached for the day was: "God spoke to me last night. He said F*** the Roosters".

Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce admitted Kennedy had over-stepped the boundaries on social media and the prop has been told to delete the message.

"The best thing for Marty to do would be to take it down. It probably wasn't the best decision for him to post it with the foul language in it," Noyce said.

"There's plenty of good stuff with Twitter for the fans in terms of engaging with players.

"But we need to be mindful of staying on that good positive communication."

When it comes to rivalries, the feud between 1908 foundation clubs South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters still rages as one of rugby league's most tribal battles.

For the past week, the Roosters have promoted tomorrow night's home game by encouraging fans on social media to join in their "Love to Hate" campaign and express how much they loathe the Rabbitohs.

There is a prize of entry into the Roosters' dressing room following the match for the fan with the banner that best expresses how much the Roosters despise the Rabbitohs.

In a move certain to rile South Sydney players and fans, the promotion even suggests the Roosters will beat Souths and the competition winner will be rewarded by watching a rendition of the team song.

The Roosters' Love to Hate competition release in part reads: "At halftime, we will announce the winning banner out of the crowd and invite the winner into the Roosters' sheds to watch the team song after the match.

"Beating Souths is always a highlight for everyone associated with the Tricolours and we want you to celebrate the event.

"Souths, the team we Love to Hate".

When South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe learned of the Roosters' marketing campaign last Monday, he responded by tweeting: "Souths fans, read this, respond accordingly".

The fierce rivalry between fans of both clubs will guarantee a hostile atmosphere tomorrow night in one of the game's true local derbies.

Roosters forward Kennedy will start the game in the front row, with Lami Tasi tipped to replace the suspended Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

It's a shame we can't back it up on the field.

Exactly mate. We aren't exactly in a good spot to be sledging them.

How is that a sledge at them?

It should actually be having the opposite effect and firing up our boys...

This reminds me of Richie Williams (who, some of you may ask) taking cheap shots at Braith before Anzac Day 2007 and also a bitter and twisted Tim Sheens bagging out the Roosters before the 2010 semi final...and we all know how those games turned out...nothing good ever happens when you sledge the opposition in public before a big game. I'd rather the boys fire up on the field as opposed to acting like teenagers acting out on social media sites. The whole hate campaign is just petty, unclassy and stupid. Look at where they are on the ladder and look at us..

Being the softest tellie tubby of a forward going round, I'd suggest Kennedy keep his mouth shut!
I thought he was smarter than that!

See. Political correctness gone wrong. Thats why we're near last. No balls.

                        Soft cock management.

If I was Nick I'd reverse the decision and insist we got up the scum from Redfern. Its ok for Maximus cockus to bag us...but we step down.

Yeah it'd be like Butterbean telling Muhammad Ali to bring it on.

Fark me, it was a souffs fan who designed the message and posted the picture, all kennedy done was cut and paste with a comment that was correct, what other teams supporter would come up with this picture????

                            Fark Souff's, Fark Crow

Yeah on this years form it may seem like David calling out Goliath, or as someone above used the analogy of Butterbean trash talking Ali, but I actually kinda like the fact that one of our players actually seems 'to get' the Rooster Vermin rivalry.
The players are constantly criticised as just being players who come here merely to earn a wage and not being passionate about the club ...here we have player who actually seems to get it, (even though you may not think what he did was all that smart) but I'll give him credit for at least showing some animosity towards our sworn enemy. I'd rather he do it on the field, but at least he's showing his hatred for Souffs in the lead up to the match... thats a start !
