IT was intended to be tongue-in-cheek, but Sydney Roosters forward Martin Kennedy has been forced to remove an offensive Twitter image aimed at arch-rivals South Sydney.
In a move to heighten hostilities tomorrow night at Allianz Stadium, Kennedy posted a tweet last Friday reading: "Only in Redfern @ down the rabbit's warren".
The image attached was a digitally-altered "Church of Redfern", where the message being preached for the day was: "God spoke to me last night. He said F*** the Roosters".
Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce admitted Kennedy had over-stepped the boundaries on social media and the prop has been told to delete the message.
"The best thing for Marty to do would be to take it down. It probably wasn't the best decision for him to post it with the foul language in it," Noyce said.
"There's plenty of good stuff with Twitter for the fans in terms of engaging with players.
"But we need to be mindful of staying on that good positive communication."
When it comes to rivalries, the feud between 1908 foundation clubs South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters still rages as one of rugby league's most tribal battles.
For the past week, the Roosters have promoted tomorrow night's home game by encouraging fans on social media to join in their "Love to Hate" campaign and express how much they loathe the Rabbitohs.
There is a prize of entry into the Roosters' dressing room following the match for the fan with the banner that best expresses how much the Roosters despise the Rabbitohs.
In a move certain to rile South Sydney players and fans, the promotion even suggests the Roosters will beat Souths and the competition winner will be rewarded by watching a rendition of the team song.
The Roosters' Love to Hate competition release in part reads: "At halftime, we will announce the winning banner out of the crowd and invite the winner into the Roosters' sheds to watch the team song after the match.
"Beating Souths is always a highlight for everyone associated with the Tricolours and we want you to celebrate the event.
"Souths, the team we Love to Hate".
When South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe learned of the Roosters' marketing campaign last Monday, he responded by tweeting: "Souths fans, read this, respond accordingly".
The fierce rivalry between fans of both clubs will guarantee a hostile atmosphere tomorrow night in one of the game's true local derbies.
Roosters forward Kennedy will start the game in the front row, with Lami Tasi tipped to replace the suspended Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.
