  • Rothfield on Pearce article:

Mentor: Roosters halfback needs a fresh start under a top NRL coach. Picture: Gregg Porteous. Source: The Daily Telegraph

MITCHELL Pearce's career at the Roosters is at the crossroads.

He can't publicly confirm what I'm writing but rest assured it's true - he's not happy at the club.

At 23, Pearce is at a stage of his career where he wants and needs to be under a great footy coach.

BLOG LIVE WITH BUZZ AT 1PM

He originally joined the Roosters to get an opportunity to learn his trade under Ricky Stuart.

Instead he got Chris Anderson, Brad Fittler and now Brian Smith.

I wrote recently that Pearce was a very good club footballer but not quite an Origin player.

Stuart can't teach him to be a great halfback in the six weeks of an Origin campaign.

He needs mentoring week in, week out. He needs someone like a Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy, Des Hasler or Stuart.

That's the only way his game will go to the next level and what he's potentially capable of achieving.

Most of the great halves have had good coaching. Peter Sterling had Jack Gibson. Steve Mortimer had Ted Glossop and later Warren Ryan.

Stuart himself had Tim Sheens. Alfie Langer had Wayne Bennett. Pearce's Origin opposite number Cooper Cronk has Bellamy.

I have no doubt Pearce could be the long-term answer for NSW at No7.

But his game needs refinement and sophistication. He needs to become a more complete football player.

I'm being told Pearce's manager is about to have talks with the Roosters management about the future direction of the club.

If Smith is staying, I'm hearing Pearce will request a release.

He is a very decent young man who understands he can't be telling a club and his employers what to do.

But at the same time wants to improve himself as a football player.

Wherever he plays next, I can guarantee he will not be going to the highest bidder.

    This isn't about money.

It's about him becoming another Cronk or even Thurston

Crap article. Pearce just needs to grow up and improve his game. His performance against the Sharks in golden point was pathetic. Rothfield has been baggging the crap out of Bennett in recent times and now he says he is a great coach. Players are sooks - their careers will be over and what will they be remembered for?

Steve Mortimer hated playing for Warren Ryan.

Whether there is elements of truth is irrelevant.

Just another bit of Buzz tabloid agenda driven noise.

Clearly gunning for him to re-link with Carney at the Sharks.

If that happens, if a News Limited journalist can successfully orchestrate something like that against us, we've got big problems.

Rothfield is not a Roosters insider. He has been working to destabilise us anyway he can. He's a spear carrier for the old $uper League and still resents us and the ARL for that.

Look at his campaign against Carney last year. Remember what he was writing about Jake Friend?

There's talk about the scrutiny of being in an inner-city club... Our blokes get targeted by News Ltd.

              Simple as that.

Cronulla need a decent halfback and more on the market makes it easier to pick one up.

His attacks on Pearce last week after Origin were designed to damage his confidence. Apparently NSW losing was all his doing according to Rothfield.

I'm increasingly seeing Roosters fans taking his bait and turning on each other, the club, the players, the coach and management.

Ignore Rothfield. He is a damaged alcohol sodden B grade hack.

Couldn't agree more with this statement the effort has been put in by the club, if true he sounds like another Gen Y whinger.

                  Agree Big Arty.
It is coming across like that.
Pearce needs to stand up NOW.

Youll find Pearce is one of a couple that need a change. And if we signed the Big Banana I would gladly let him go. He is not going to get better. he should be commanding games by now.

I agree with Rothfield for once.

It is time for new management, Smith cannnot get a new contract here. Pearce, Kennedy and Aubbo and a few others are floundering under him instead of improving - I don't want the same thing happening to our next wave.

True... but Rothfield shouldn't be running our recruitment.

there's another article about Pearce in the Astonisher, where they went to Horrie and asked what advice he'd give to Mitch. Simple, yet insightful. If only he could be added to our coaching staff

If Pearce isn't the problem then it's the way he's being coached.

I'd rather lose Smith than Pearce. But I'm not convinced that Pearce would improve under a better coach.

                            Like Daniel Anderson.

John, do you think that D A would be a hard enough coach to sort out the brats that exists now?
I really feel we need a hard arse no nonsense coach that will not take a backward step from the players OR management.
I think that Pearce would improve under such a coach.
