Smith out, Stone in – Knights directors consider quick move on coaching job
    Brad Walter | August 4, 2009

DEPARTING Newcastle coach Brian Smith might be asked to step aside immediately or give greater control of the team to assistant Rick Stone at a meeting of the Knights board tomorrow night.

With Stone having already been pencilled in to take over next season when Smith leaves for Sydney Roosters, it is possible he will be immediately appointed to the job.

Brisbane’s on-field woes under new coach Ivan Henjak, who was assistant to Wayne Bennett before he quit to join St George Illawarra, have given some Knights directors cause for concern and they are open to the idea of giving Stone greater responsibility for the remainder of the season.

It is even possible that he could be installed as a caretaker to help the board assess whether he is the right man for the job in the long term.

With the Knights’ 2010 roster virtually decided, directors would like to be sure that Stone can get the best out of the players he will have at his disposal if he is given charge. The Herald was told that all options were likely to be discussed at the board meeting, which was due to decide on the process for appointing a new coach after Smith’s shock decision to leave a year before his contract expires to accept a four-year deal with the Roosters.

Among the possibilities is that he will be told to stand down immediately and Stone appointed to take over. Smith could also be asked to take a back seat to give Stone more responsibility with a view to him being given the job next season.

Stone, who is in his fourth season at the Knights, has a 20-year coaching resume, including three Queensland Cup premierships in 13 seasons with Burleigh. He is understood to have unanimous support among the nine directors on the Knights board and also from chief executive Steve Burraston.

Initially, it was intended that Smith would remain in charge until the end of the season but the fact the Knights have lost their two games since his departure was announced and are now teetering on the brink of dropping out of the top eight has some directors considering installing Stone for the rest of the season.

With Melbourne assistant coach Michael Maguire, Cronulla and NSW assistant Shane Flanagan and former Bulldogs premiership-winning mentor Steve Folkes among the applicants for the job, there is a view that Stone should be given the opportunity to show why he deserves the job before such highly-credentialled candidates are ruled out.

The board could also decide to approach other potential coaches, such as Wests Tigers mentor Tim Sheens, or advertise for more applicants before making a final decision at another meeting on August 26.

Burraston said last night that he had not been approached by any directors about replacing Smith immediately. ‘‘It’s a scheduled board meeting and will kick off proceedings for replacement - no other changes,’’ he said.

But even if no decision is made at tomorrow night’s meeting, Smith’s tenure is sure to come under further scrutiny should the Knights lose again to Parramatta on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce was yesterday forced to deny that the club was trying to convince Isaac de Gois to follow Smith to Sydney next season after a caller to SkY Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast reported seeing him at the Newcastle hooker’s house on Saturday.

Noyce, the former Wests Tigers chief executive, explained that he was with the joint venture club’s recruitment manager Warren McDonnell, who was picking up some tickets for the Roosters-Knights match from his son, Shannon, the Newcastle fullback who shares a house with de Gois.
intersting article, if the knights do release smith early, do we have him onboard working at the roosters early? Does freddy stay and work with smith or does freddy leave early???

And Degois, do we have room for another hooker??? Jaubs, Friend and possibly degois???

Heads up: coach not involved in secret meetings with Roosters boss and Knights players
    Brett Keeble, Newcastle Knights | August 4, 2009 - 10:28AM

It would have been one of the biggest stories of the NRL season if only it was true.

Instead, like the concept behind the successful Seinfeld television series, it became a story about nothing but still worth telling.

An anonymous caller rang radio station KO-FM yesterday to say they spotted departing Knights coach Brian Smith with future employer Steve Noyce, the Sydney Roosters' CEO, at the Lambton home of Newcastle players Isaac De Gois and Shannon McDonnell on Saturday afternoon, about six hours before the Roosters shocked the Knights 30-18 at nearby EnergyAustralia Stadium.

De Gois, a Wests Tigers junior before establishing himself with Cronulla, is in the first year of a three-year deal with the Knights.

McDonnell, recruited mid-season from the Tigers, is unsigned beyond this year.

Not a good look for Smith, already under the pump given the team's recent form slump, if the story was true.

He would have had some explaining to do to players, restless Knights fans, and a board containing at least some directors who reportedly wanted him sacked on the spot when he confirmed a fortnight ago that he was off to the Roosters for the next four years.

    Except that Smith wasn't there.

Noyce had driven McDonnell's parents, Warren and Marie, from Sydney's outer west to attend the game, and they stopped for a few minutes to see their son and pick up tickets.

Warren McDonnell is the Tigers' recruitment manager and is friends with Noyce, who was in charge at the Tigers for eight years before joining the Roosters this season.

When asked by The Herald yesterday, Smith, De Gois, Noyce, Shannon and Warren McDonnell all said Smith was not present.

"If someone's mistaken me for Shannon McDonnell's dad, who weighs 115 kilos and has a nickname of Sheep's Head, we're seriously moving into the area of being mischievous," Smith said.

Warren McDonnell said there was a glaring error in Smith's explanation.

"He's totally mistaken, and you can tell him I'll have him for that. It's not Sheep's Head, it's Pig's Head," McDonnell laughed.

"I take objection to being compared to Smithy because I'm a much better sort than him. I'm much younger and I've got a lot more going for me.

"Noycey rung me this morning and said, 'Listen to this,' and I said, 'What a load of crap.'

"Noycey and I obviously worked together at Wests Tigers, we were travelling up to watch the same game, we're both from the same area at Campbelltown, our wives are good friends, and we travelled up together.

"We called in to see my young bloke and pick up some tickets. Noycey's known my young bloke and Isaac since they were about 12, we were there probably five minutes, said hello and goodbye, then went and had a coffee and something to eat at Wests Leagues Club."

Noyce said: "That's exactly it. That's 100 per cent all of it. Brian certainly wasn't there.

"I don't think any of us look like Smithy, that's for sure."

Smith accepted there would be increased media and supporter scrutiny of him and the Knights after their successive losses to Manly and the Roosters, and the newsworthiness of his current team losing to his future team last Saturday.

But he said he and the players had a job to do each day, irrespective of previous results, and were doing their best to prepare for their next game against his former team, the Eels, at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday.

"We all understand that. It probably is human nature but I reckon if you did a count on rumour versus truth, it would be 99 to one," Smith said.
Is this cloak and dagger stuff from Noyce???

I don't think so mate. I don't think we will be getting De Gois, we don't need him anyway. I'm more interested to see what happens if they flick Smith. It would be interesting to see if he starts doing some work with us right away.

If Smith did get an early 'release' from the Knights I'd have him in the background at the Roosters.

2009 is the mess that Fittler and the players started together, let them finish it together. It's got nothing to do with Brian Smith and that's the way it should be.

Smith can spend his time pondering our roster for next season, and getting a feel for how the Roosters operate in the back office.

The only contact I would encourage him to have with the players is a private one on one chat with each of them, organised and co-ordinated by Steve Noyce. I'd allow an hour each player so there can be communication both ways, Smith can get an inside on the players and they get an inside on him. Which means they start the pre-season headsup.

That can be done at times outside the normal training hours, it's not as if these blokes don't have free time on their hands.

Leave Smith out of the Roosters spotlight until season's end.

I hope NCL let him go.
Gives him heaps of time to watch videos and create a dosier on each player, then he can get right into it in Nov

Degois would be a welcome edition to the team. I can see it happening and if it does we would be a stronger team in season '10. He has been one of the unsung, underated players of the modern game.

              BRING DEGOIS TO EASTS !

                  I rate smith

BUT.....how quickly we forget an article about Brad Fittler in 2007 when there was a cry for his help.

There was going to be an up-roar from players and fans if Freddie didn't take the reigns forom Anderson. We would've never let the club forgive if Freddie did'nt take over.....remeber. He had a three from three winning record, and went onto a lot more wins in 2007, but missed the finals.

2008....making the finals with ease, but to choke.

2009....Hopefully we can get off the spoon.

It hurts to see Freddie die in Rugby League this way.

I reckon it wont hurt Freddy to get away from Footy for a few years.

He was a schoolboy when he debuted. He won comps, played rep footy and lived and breathed the game all his life basically. In reality he hardly had extended stints out with injury.

It wont hurt him to feel the sting of reality, theres actually something he isnt that good at. We all have to deal with these things at times, its character building, its when you find what a persons made of, if you can learn from the past and comeback better than you were.

Id hope Freddy comes back in a few seasons, hopefully to coach some kids in our junior rep teams and can make a go of coaching. He must have alot to offer especially to youngsters.

Freddy seems to be bitter at the club for the way they handled his situation and he mentioned he did not want to work with Brian Smith next year, even if offered the assistant coach role. He is a good coach, but he can be a great one if they just let him be an assistant and learn off a head coach for a few years and than reinstate him. At the moment, he just does not have the authority a coach should have over his players.

Fittler's led a pretty sheltered life having been involved in the footy world since the age of 17. Everything has come pretty easy to him or more often than not, handed to him on a platter.

Apart from working on his house renovations, the bloke has never had a job outside footy. Never needed one.

About time he tackled the real world without the security blanket of football for a few years.

It might just make a man of him, having a master other than footy.

As for the bitterness - well the well stocked gravy train he's been on for years has hit the wall, so no surprise he's pissed off at that. Most of us would be.
