  • Maloney Defence

Maloney will have to work hard on his defence in the off season. At the moment he is topping the missed tackle stats. He has missed 102 tackles so far. Oh and Pearcey comes in at 9th with 65 missed tackles. Source is Rugby League Week August 1 2012. Page 50.

Look I think concerns around Maloney's defence are overblown, all through the years, 5/8ths have had weaknesses with defence, usually because they have the biggest men hitting them after they get a head of steam up, Lockyer had Carroll helping him for most of his career, I'm pretty sure Maloney is a better defender than Soward & he's done OK. And even after saying that I don't think he's a bad defender anyway, he certainly doesn't lack for effort & guts, he just falls off some tough ones, he'll improve too!

Small price to pay for having a competent 5/8 wouldn't you think?

Like that guy who paid for a $5.65 systems 8 ticket and won 50 Million.

THis may be an issue. He is pretty weak in defence.
Saints and Tigers managed to both win comps with number 6ers who couldn't tackle.

I don't disagree with the comments here. I have watched Maloney pull off some great tackles. I have seen him miss a few too. I'm sure he will work hard on his defence.

Right here, Andy. And it's not all stats, just most of them.

You just proved stats mean farrk all in that very sentence.

If you've been watching him closely over the last few weeks and haven't noticed him miss a tackle, yet he's still on top of the missed tackle list, wouldn't that make the tackles that he's missed about as meaningless as your stats?

Between your spelling and your grammar you can understand why I was a little confused, Andy.

I can't wait to see him play in our colours. Like others have said, other teams have gone well with 5/8ths whose defence is shoddy. And not to open a can of worms, but Carney didn't have the best defence in 2010.
