NRL: Parramatta Eels' Cheyse Blair out to prove Roosters wrong

    6 Mar 12 @ 10:12am

FOR young Parramatta winger Cheyse Blair, every game he plays in the NRL is the chance to ``stick it up’’ to the Sydney Roosters.

The 20-year-old made an encouraging debut for the Eels in Friday’s 18-6 loss to Brisbane.

Now he is desperate to keep his place in the team to show Roosters coach Brian Smith he was wrong to let him leave.

Blair, originally from the Gold Coast, has represented both NSW and Australia at schoolboy level and admitted he was shocked when he was no longer required by the Roosters despite being a standout performer in their under-20s side.

‘‘I was there two years and thought I was going well and then they gave me a release,’’ Blair said.

‘‘We don’t play them until round 23 so I have to make sure I keep working hard. I am desperate to stay in the side so I can get the chance to stick it up them when we play them.’‘

Blair along with fellow winger Ken Sio and centres Ryan Morgan and Esi Tonga form one of the most inexperienced backlines in the competition but all four performed admirably, especially in defence.

Blair admitted the media scrutiny surrounding the quartet was difficult for them in the build-up to the game.

‘‘There was a lot of pressure on us,’’ he said.

‘‘In the papers, they were talking about how inexperienced we are, and doing the same on The Footy Show. But we went alright.

‘‘Our defence, particularly in the first half was great, and although in the second half we didn’t go so great, we dropped two balls close to our line and it’s hard to come back from that.’‘

Sio, in only his second game, also caught the eye, looking assured under the high ball, and showing tremendous speed and power with the ball in hand in attack.

The quietly-spoken winger, who is a local product from Blacktown, scored on his NRL debut in the final game of 2011 against the Gold Coast, and showed flashes of brilliance against the Broncos.

‘‘Although we lost, I really enjoyed the game,’’ Sio said.

‘‘I grew up supporting the Eels when I was young and had my dad watching here as well as some friends from my church so it was a big night and what I have always wanted to do.

‘‘I really hope I can stay in the side. I would love to play the Warriors next week and hopefully I’ve done enough to keep my place.’’

Was a good call to punt him.

Has been one of the worst defenders all year.
