I sat down and recorded and watched it last night with my 12 year old son. It was his first viewing of that game, as he was only 6 months old when we made the GF in 2000. He is now in awe of players like Phillips, Cross, and how good Fletcher was. He did know of Freddy and was so excited to see his favourite Minichiello playing with spark as he cant remember when that last was. He loved the little fast bloke - Lam. He was in Awe at the sheer size of Rubes. And Freddy......what can you say about that bloke. head and shoulders the best player in the game that year. The friggen Groin cruelled him another comp I fear.

And he immediately formulated the opinion that Hughes, Albert, and the Johns brothers were smart arsed idiots.

It went that little bit further in engraining the roosters permanently in his heart and he is now looking forward to next year with vigour and excitement.

Good post Melon. I love these old games too. One of my boys actually asked if Grandad (my dad) named me after Brad Fittler (my name being Brad, of course.) Very funny.

what a difference between the side then and now.. the most noticeable ones..

        - freddy was a freak - we have severely lacked a player of his creativeness and quality since he left (apart from carney).. what a difference he makes

        - The whole team was much fitter and lighter. The line speed, quick play the ball speed, and pure speed of the outside backs was awesome. Even though our pack was huge, they were mobile. Big shout out to Fletch, he looked gone in the 60th minute, but played out the whole game, what champion

        - that team loved to play for the jersey, guys like freddy and fletch, you could tell how much the club meant to them

        - that crowd was awesome!! apart from the 2002 final, i have never seen a chookpen crowd like that until the 2010 semi against the tigers. The passion was unreal, i would have loved to be there..

looks like this team we have now can learn a lot from that game!!

In 2000 GF Phillips could have easily won the Churchill. He saved about 20 points.

You are so spot on with that - one of the most heroic performances by a fullback ever - made the score look close single handedly.

And don't underestimate his 2002 heroics - one of the best full back's game (in the true sense of the word) I have ever seen.

Phillips is in the top 5 of my favorite rooster players I've watched,

right up there with hastings, freddy, ricko and arty (even though I only ever saw highlights of arty playing).

He made the difficult look so simple and was a true professional.

Mini couldn't tackle then on the wing. Missed the tackles for the first and last tries.

                    He hasn't improved.

                    The FlogPen .

                    You know it makes sense.

My DVD of this game came today and I'm just watching it now. I can't believe how fast the game was back then, before the wrestling etc came in. Johns awarded a dodgy try similar to Slater's on Friday night. Those things never change.

He had a fractured shoulder if I remember correctly and I've been told he said Ricky Stuart would have to kill him to keep him out of the game.

The Custodian was one of the finest players ever to don a Roosters jersey. Fiercely loyal, passionate and quite literally gave his all for the club.

The speed of the game that year then also had something to do with unlimited interchange which was in effect that year It was incredibly fast

Fletcher had better ball skills than most halves possess today.
