  • Plan for Carney and Mortimer?

Do we have a plan for these two?

I saw them today (first time I've watched the Jets) and the 2 things I noticed:

    1) Mortimer is a celebrity... he is way too good to not be playing 80 minutes of NRL every week. It's criminal how Braith punted him all season.

Seriously what's the deal?!? We have Pearce + Maloney. Why did we sign Maloney when we have Mortimer sitting idle and being paid $200k+?!?

    2) Carney walked around a lot (the pace of the game was pretty slow) but during this time he was giving directions to the players around him. IMO this is why the dogs only scored 6... he seemed to be organising the players really well.

In addition, while he was wearing #5 and defended as a left wing, but when we had possession he seemed to switch to centre. While he fumbled a bit, his hit-ups were generally strong, and his low centre of gravity makes him a b@stard to tackle.

Surely we can do something with him?!? Again, he's sorta sitting idle.

    ---

On ABC radio after te ame Mortimer was on the radio and basically said "look I'm contracted until the end of 2013 but really wanna be playing in the NRL."

Nothing slipped but him and Daniel Anderson seemed to share the neuance that he's looking around and will dump the Chooks if he doesn't start playing NRL games soon.

How much of a loss would it be if he moved on? I just thinkthe guy's a champ and we need to start using him!

    1. Mortimer isn't on more than 200k.

    2. Carney has already signed a deal in Super League.

      1) Eels are paying half but he's on 250k or so (not that anybody really knows player salaries, but word is that's what the Eels put him on after 2009.)

Either way, he's on more than all the Jets players and is talented. My point is that we're wasting his talent and he's likely to walk out on us soon...

      2) Fair enough...

Well I'm a fan of Mortimer but I've already accepted that he has no place in the team. Unless we get rid of Friend (which I also have already accepted won't happen) for Mortimer and use Seluini off the bench.

          Probably true...
Oh well thanks for confirming it at least.

Not a great loss if he moves on great kid though and would love to have him as backup but he's not in Pearceys or Maloneys class IMO.Ive met him a couple of times and you won't meet a nicer kid deserves another shot at NRL level.

It speaks volumes of Mortimer when he couldn't crack a crap first grade side in Parramatta, and still didn't manage to be a regular bench player for us let alone make the starting 13. Put it this way. We signed Seluini mid-season for the role Mortimer was meant to be playing.

We have done this bloke Morts no favours this season. As said above... he needs to be in firsts every week. If not with us, at least with another club. We are wasting this kid from what league has to offer and we are doing him and his talent no favours keeping in the Jets.

You play the higher level and you will improve. You play at a lower level and thats where you will eventually be. You only get better by competing against better opponents and thats where your skills will shine. We dont let him do that... Wasted!

My complete bias against Mitchell Pearce aside for a second, there's only one half that has played first grade this year who is going to be playing in a grand final next Sunday.

Mortimer is a really tough, committed and solid half with a good long kicking game, a fair cross-field bomb, and no real short kicking game. He backs-up breaks better than most and is hard to tackle, the slippery little thing.

He has a great attitude and I like the guy, but he is just not creative enough for us, I reckon.

But yeah - he is definitely too good for Reserve grade.

Good on him but the Grand Final he will be playing in is at midday - so what's your point.

Having been at every Jets home game this year, and at the game yesterday, I don't see that he is too good for Reggies. He has done some good things for the Jets this year but some pretty terrible stuff too and has not, for mine, dominated at that level. As Ralph points out, that may be due to being held back by the standard of Reserve Grade but he hasn't been screaming for a first grade spot.

I love the fact he clearly tries hard and has never given up despite three years of reserve grade but it might be time for him to go ply his trade in England.

I would like to see Mortimer as our starting half back. I'm hearing lots of reasons from esteemed commentators of the game (eg Greg Alexander) that he's a just good support player etc etc... well, to my way of thinking it that's saying that he's very good a reading a game! - You can't teach it and in todays game there are very few of these 'true footballers' going 'round (viz Thurston, Smith). Mitchell Pearce I believe would be better suited to playing 2nd receiver in the traditional 5/8th role - he's been doing this anyway, most of his try assists have come from plays where he has more space and time to finish the play. And Maloney, well ... someone help me out.

                          Easts to Win!

Unfortunately I missed the game yesterday. We were on our way back from the snow but I have seen Morts play a lot this year. He is defnitely either rocks or diamonds. He does some great things and then some very ordinary things. His strength of character cannot be questioned. He puts in and is a deserved captain of the club. it would be a fitting finish for him captain the mighty Jets to a grand final victory.

He is a bit limited, and he's definitely on the small side.....but he's committed and doesn't give up. Something that couldn't be said about the imposter we had playing at 6 in first grade all season.
