  • Tagive retires from rugby league

Sydney Roosters player Peni Tagive has today announced his retirement from rugby league.

A key member of the Newtown Jets 2012 NSW Cup Premiership winning side, 24-year-old Tagive has decided to retire to pursue fulltime university study where he will be undertaking a Bachelor of Business.

Tagive made his NRL debut with the Wests Tigers in 2008 in a round 1 match against the St George Illawarra Dragons whom he joined in 2011, before joining the Sydney Roosters in 2012. In a career hindered by injury, he played five NRL games with the Tricolours and 18 overall in the top grade.

“I want to thank everyone at the club for their support through the year and for supporting the decision I have made for my future, as I look ahead to life after footy,” said Tagive.

“From the admin staff to the players and coaches, everyone’s been really good to me and I’ll still call the Roosters my family.

“I’d like to wish the boys and everyone at the club all the best for next season.”

Roosters chief executive, Steve Noyce, added: “We are all truly pleased for Peni. While the decision he has made has been a difficult one, it’s wonderful that he has decided to undertake fulltime university study, and we congratulate him on this exciting new chapter he is about to embark on.”

“Popular among his teammates and with all the staff at the club, the Sydney Roosters would like to take this opportunity to thank Peni for his contribution to the Roosters and to wish him all the very best for the future.”

Good luck Peni. I don't think you fullfilled your potential on the field, but I hope you do so off it.

Realistically, not a big loss to the squad, and was only likely to get a run in 1sts if injuries happened to a couple ahead of him. SKD, BJ, Moga, RTS, Tupou & Henry were all in front of him, and with Oldfield coming he was only ever likely to wear a Newtown jersey.

yes didn't see much of him but if he pursuing studies over sports, then that is a very smart move and good luck.

Think the writing was on the wall when Tupou showed some impressive form on the left wing at the end of the year for us. He might have lacked Tagive's speed, but his tremendous finishing ability and catching under the high ball looked great.

Still, makes us look like idiots for trading Linnett for Tagive, don't you think? A lot rests on Moga and Leilua now, to provide some genuine strike on our left edge.

I suspect Peni realised that winning the GF with the Jets was about as good it was going to get with his injuries and decided to get out on a high note.

Good luck to the bloke for his future. His opportunities would have limited for the Roosters as it was, and he has struggled throughout his career to string more than 1-2 games together due to injury. He will be a good pickup for a local footy club out Macarthur way if his body can stand up to it.

Thanks for your time with the club Peni and esp helping the Jets to winning the comp....gave it his best.

Liked his comments about Easts as a club too...bit of class.

Thanks for your efforts Peni and good luck in choosing study over footy.

I am sure it will work out well for him in the long run. It's a shame his footy career was so injury ravaged but at least he got to win a GF with the jets.
