On Cooper's Defense; if you were him would you even bother learning how to be a good defender? Just so you could make the 2 tackles a game in rugby? He has the attributes to become a good defender if someone teaches him/he applies himself.
This could just be wishful thinking though.Last edited by Ben94; 10-11-2012, 01:01 PM.

Very good points Ben.
Defense is one thing you can be taught. As for the ability to create that's instinctive and really can't be taught IMO.
I always tell kids parents I coach that it's not natural to stick your head down and try to tackle while elbows and knees are flying in all directions. But it is essential they eliminate fear from the equation as early as possible. Sorry not eliminate fear, use the fear to your advantage.
Harder to teach is how to read in defense. SKD still struggles with it. Many say he's soft, that's bullshit IMO, he's just dumb and can't read or makes the read too late and gets burned often. Most bad readers in defense try to over compensate and rush up and as we've seen against classy ball players that spells disaster often.
The advantage SKD has is his ability to fool very good defenders. Watch him in slow-mo, his legs cross as he runs, good defenders are trying to read him but they often fail. My theory is if he has NFI what he's doing as he runs how could a defender.
Carntey is a very poor defender, can't read for shit. Pooper couldn't be worse I'm sure. He's not like a Sandcow or Baloney who IMO aren't scared they are just physically unable to stop bigger players, especially with modern defense being to wrap the ball up not go low. IMO both those players would've been much better defenders 20 yrs + ago when low tacklers were encouraged and rewarded. Toovey and Johns were great defenders, now a days I believe they would be less so, as is the nature of the game now.
As long as Pooper is willing to learn and commit his body I have no doubt he could compete in defense. And at FB he'd surely be better than Mini who has NFI and never has in defense, he's hopeless.
The FlogPen .
You know it makes sense.

Will say though I do think Johns would be a great defender across any generation.
