The cost of living in Sydney....

I just read a article on how the Sydney Swans are allowed salary cap concessions when signing players simply because of the cost of living in Sydney.

It got me thinking to why we are not allowed the same luxury in our salary cap. The eastern suburbs, where I assume most of our players would live, is one of the most expensive areas to live in . Also spare a thought for the young guys we have got from abroad who have to rent out housing in these high profile locations. Many 18 and 19 year olds in the NYC are from New Zealand and Qld. I know that they would have part time jobs, but it still tough on them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge we actually do not have an academy or facility where the younger players from abroad can live in. Many of the older fringe firstgraders we sign are on around only 50k as well.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this one...

I thought the club arranges accommodation for recruited young players? Usually with nice people or families who can accommodate them? Sort of like having a boarder living in the house?

imo, it's probably bullshit to attract AFL players there given that the Swans are an expansion club, and the AFL want them to be successful. That's just what i think though

keep in mind it probably wouldn't work in the NRL, given how many sydney teams there are compared to in the AFL

I'm pretty sure the club owns a house in Bondi where they house some of the boys and I'd imagine some of the younger boys get billeted out to families.I do agree we should get some dispensation in the cap for living in Sydney for fringe first graders especially that's why Brisbane allegedly offer less $ for players cause with the cost of living being a major selling point.

Correct Filth.The club was advertising again just 2 weeks ago for any families willing to take in a boarder to contact them.

That's correct.Two tips:

1. Calculate the cost of the amount of food you'd think a 20 year old should eat and then triple it.
2. Look at your electricity bill. Take a photo of it so you can remember how low it once was.

Exactly.

In some ways its an advantage being based in Sydney's east as it is a place where people actually WANT to live. On that basis, maybe Canberra should be given extra cap space to attract people as no one would actually want to live there.

Depends on what the NRL would classify as Sydney.

For example Bankstown or out west in Penrith are both considered to be Sydney, but they are a lot easier to live in Monetary wise, apart from the odd stolen car and mugging.

Eastern suburb rent prices are through the roof, no pun intended. I think that we definitely should be allowed a higher salary cap given those circumstances.

Not all Roosters players live in the eastern suburbs. A few live out west and others south west.

And other players who don't play for the roosters live in the eastern suburbs.

So how would the ARLC be expected to attempt to determine which players and clubs should quality for a cost of living allowance and which don't? Way too easy to rort I reckon.

Leave it as is. Those who can afford to live in the exxy suburbs and choose to do so do, those who can't and/or don't live outside and commute if necessary.

That meaning Woollahra Darling Point Double Bay Bellevue Hill Rose Bay Point Piper Vaucluse Watsons Bay & Dover Heights.
Mini may live in 1 of those areas.

I doubt any of them live in North Bondi or Bondi Beach either. I think they live more around Coogee Maroubra Roseberry Moore Park.

James Maloney has bought a house on the Central Coast were he & his young family live. I know a few Islander boys travel by train from out West to go training. Perrett even though he is now gone & Arona both live out West.

I'm not sure if it is still used, but a small block of units in Bondi accomodated players who were from out of town. It had a house mother there as well. More recently a lot of the youngsters live in with families, as has been mentioned here, also bearing in mind that a lot of the young guys are still at school primarly at Matraville Sports High in Chifley, a lot of them live in around that area.
I see a lot of the young fellas at Eastgarden Shopping centre Pagewood.
You usually will see a group of young islanders wondering around there.
Always well behaved I might add.
