You have to weigh up whether his attacking ability makes up for his defensive liability. He's been targetted a fair bit in his career, and spent a fair bit of time in reserves at Parra last year because of it.

It's all about whether his focus is on footy or elsewhere, and that changes from month to month.

I agree he has had his problems, but at his best he was still one of the best wingers in the game. It is one thing that still haunts all easts fans that Byrne incident. I still say when the incident gets brought up by mates or my brothers, if Grothe was on that wing we win that GF.

Papworth was a goose .he got injured because he wouldnt train. But what little I saw of him was spectacular .Seen all his trails and a few comp games .Probably the best runner Ive ever seen..but he wouldnt put the hard yards in.

What about Steve Hage (pronounced hargy). Touted as the biggest buy of the season circa 1980. We got him from either Newtown or the dogs, can't quite remember. Did his knee in a pre-season match and never played again!

Byrne was no slug, go back and watch the whole incident.
The Byrne GF bashing is a tired old bandwagon with selective vision.

Had any of the leaders in the team in 03 and 04 stood up, there would have been another 2 GF wins.

I watched the incident live at the ground and a hundred times on tv. Any winger with decent pace would of scored.

You guys also had a bloke called James Pickering.

He invented new ways of missing football games.

There is no way we would have won a GF with Grothe in our team, with his attitude at the time.

                  I disagree.

Satts would not have even seen him - let alone tackle him.

Grothe has a smoke screen like James Bond.

                  Byrne is retarded.

Even thinking about his Stan Laurel head makes me dry reach.
