Smith takes his broom to Roosters
Brad Walter, Greg Prichard and Jessica Halloran | August 19, 2009

Long-serving Sydney Roosters trainer Ron Palmer is the first casualty of the new regime under coach Brian Smith, and chief executive Steve Noyce confirmed last night there could be more staff changes.

Palmer, one of the most recognisable faces in the game after more than 20 years with the Roosters and NSW Origin team, was told yesterday that his services would not be required next season.

After being sacked by Newcastle last Friday, Smith has turned his attention to his new job with the Roosters and Noyce said a number of positions were under review.

''It's difficult,'' Noyce said. ''Ronnie has been part of the Roosters for in excess of 20 years and he has done a great job over a long period of time.

''I spoke to him and said that for next year we had made a decision to appoint someone else. At this stage we don't know who that is but there have been quite a few people express an interest in becoming involved with the club next year.

''There may be further changes, we haven't worked through it all yet because obviously up until late last week Brian was focused on his job with Newcastle, but now that he is no longer there he has begun putting his mind towards next season with the Roosters.''

Considering we are the slowest bunch a slugs that can only last about 40 mins on our good days I think this is about time!

Ronnie's methods are obviously outdated, and he was part of our current problem. Top bloke, but the party's over. Time for new blood with new techniques and a new hunger.

Ronnie has been the fittest bloke on the park all year and has put in more minutes than anyone else.

Mack have you got his stats?

Big fan of this decision. Hopefully the rest follow him out the door.

top bloke but top blokes are only mildly effective.

The appointment will be a Parra or Newcastle trainer.
Smith will want someone he can trust.

Hopefully this is the first in a really good cleanout of our coaching/fitness/training ranks.

Ronnie is a great old trouper but he's had his days in the sun, time to move on and hang up the shorts, after giving them a good wash of course.

We need fitness/training personnel with new attitudes and new ideas - some fresh air into the place. And someone who kick a few butts and gets our lazy arsed prissies into tip top shape.

This is fine with me even though I appreciate the guy is an institution at the Roosters but there is no escaping the fact that the Roosters are unfit and slow.

Goodbye Mr Palmer and thank you for your many many years of contribution.
