Smith takes his broom to Roosters

Long-serving Sydney Roosters trainer Ron Palmer is the first casualty of the new regime under coach Brian Smith, and chief executive Steve Noyce confirmed last night there could be more staff changes.
Palmer, one of the most recognisable faces in the game after more than 20 years with the Roosters and NSW Origin team, was told yesterday that his services would not be required next season.
After being sacked by Newcastle last Friday, Smith has turned his attention to his new job with the Roosters and Noyce said a number of positions were under review.
''It's difficult,'' Noyce said. ''Ronnie has been part of the Roosters for in excess of 20 years and he has done a great job over a long period of time.
''I spoke to him and said that for next year we had made a decision to appoint someone else. At this stage we don't know who that is but there have been quite a few people express an interest in becoming involved with the club next year.
''There may be further changes, we haven't worked through it all yet because obviously up until late last week Brian was focused on his job with Newcastle, but now that he is no longer there he has begun putting his mind towards next season with the Roosters.''
