  • We need a Centre, Josh hannay needs a club......

Josh Hannay one of six Australian league players deported from UK
    By staff writers
August 19, 2009 Six Australian rugby league players face deportation from Great Britain following a UK Borders Agency probe into the validity of their visas.

Josh Hannay, Jace van Dijk, Tony Duggan, Damien Quinn, Mark Dalle Cort and Darren Mapp, all players with Celtic Crusaders, the Super League's newest club, have until September 7 to leave the UK after being told they were working in the country illegally.

Hannay has the highest profile of the players, having played for North Queensland Cowboys, Cronulla Sharks and Queensland.

Mapp played in the NRL for Brisbane Broncos, Canberra raiders and Cronulla Sharks.

"As the result of an intelligence-led investigation into possible immigration offences among players at Celtic Crusaders, we can confirm that six Australian nationals have been served with papers confirming that they are illegally present in the UK," the UK Border Agency said in a statement.

"We now expect these individuals to leave the country. If they refuse to do so voluntarily, we will enforce their removal.

"The players are prohibited from working in the UK with immediate effect."

The players, who cannot now work in Britain for 10 years, have been banned from playing with immediate effect.

The Crusaders have cancelled the contracts of the players.

All six are understood to have pleaded guilty to hiding their intention to play semi-professional and professional sport when they applied for holiday and student visas before the Welsh club rose from the national leagues.

"Celtic Crusaders have cooperated fully with the UK Border Agency's investigation and we will abide by their findings," Crusaders chief executive Mike Turner said.

"We are sorry to be losing players who have made a big contribution in making Celtic Crusaders a Super League club.

"This situation does, however, provide us with an ideal opportunity to give some Welsh youngsters valuable first-team action for our final three games of the season, starting this Saturday when we play Leeds Rhinos in Newport."
Could he be an option, handy centre, Brillian goal kicker......

        Sa, don't get me started.
Hannay? Not quick enough from what I remember.

How long is it since Josh Hannay played in the NRL - 2 or 3 years?

And each year his pace would have decreased, and he was never a speedster to start with.

Speed is what we need, although the goal kicking would be handy.

I'd have to say no thanks, due to his age and lack of speed. We'd just be taking on an older version of what we already have - slow centres.

Hannay was slow, barely broke the line, was an okay defender.

Morbs has it over him in EVERY way (defense, skill, agility, and even speed!) except goalkicking.

Even Tighe, who is a bloody average centre if I have ever seen one, at least has pace to make the most of a gap, or broken play. If we look past the big-name centres (Josh Morris, Michael Jennings, Justin Hodges, Matt Cooper, Jamie Lyon, Joel Monaghan, Willie Tonga, Steve Matai, Brent Tate) and the garbage slow centres who we shouldn't touch with a ten foot pole (Brett Delaney, Junior Sau, Ben Harris, Ben Pomeroy, Maurice Blair, Keith Lulia, Ben Smith, Taulima Tautai, and our very own Slowiola), there leaves a few younger centres with a bit of pace out there who would be nice pickups.

Esileki Tonga - big, strong, not amazingly fast but fast enough, highly skillful
Jarod Croker - quick on his feet and between the ears, great footwork
Brad Tighe - already wrote about him before
Blake Ayshford - in the Morbs mold, has ball skills but no real pace or agility
Steve Michaels - has pace, but TERRIBLE defense and iron hands, no thanks
Daryl Millard - off to ESL
Joel Moon - creative, fast, lacks size though, Ben Jones does a similar job for us
Jamal Idris - top player when given good ball, Dogs wouldn't let him go
Jerome Ropati - on the outer with Warriors, fast, but too many errors in his game
Beau Champion - great hole-hitting centre, but Souths wouldn't let him go
Chris Lawrence - very fast young kid, serious pace, but Tigers will keep him
Ashley Graham - talented centre, defensively poor but has pace and size
Dean Collis - off to Sharks
Joseph Tomane - off to Titans
Will Chambers - off to Rugby Union
Joel Reddy - playing very well for Eels, might lose his spot when Tahu comes, worth a look
Matthew Wright - Sharks rookie, too young but shown some class
Ben Farrar - great skillful and fast centre, but seems to be enjoying it at Manly
Chase Stanley - off to Melbourne
Krisnan Inu - out of form, but can be a great player, will revel alongside Tahu

Really, narrowing it down, there aren't many players that we can both really do with AND be able to sign from their current club.

There's a reason he was punted to the UK.

Wasn't he going to be the youngest player ever to play first grade under Tim Sheens but was denied by the ARL?

Certainly didn't live up to early hype.
