aahhh yes i remember. The ref would call "play the ball"and bang crash booom , fletch fitzy, moz would be all over the oppo before they could say holy syht. Not only smash em but drive them back in to yesterday. I might watch that gf on sat night with the 10yo son. Born in 2002
It was Morley Ricketson & Crocker that were the enforcers in the pack in 02 03 & 04. Those 3 were hard & prepared to hurt the opposition. I loved watching those 3 back in the day.
Give me football intelligence over speed every day of the week.
Vascos right and Mini is the classic example mate.
When he was younger and had a spine he relied on pace. He was constantly out of position but, in attack and defense, used his speed to cover his lack of footy smarts.
Fast forward to now and his asset, his speed, is gorne sadly. He tries his carnt off but he can't hit that old number he could. Now he looks inept often.
Luke Phillips didn't have a lot of speed in his legs but he had it between his ears.
While you are right in what you say mate, footy smarts is preferable to speed, Mini also proves a player can win a Golden Boot on speed alone. It can overcome.

Granted he relied on speed by he had enormous upper body strength too. I remember him brining the ball back and bumping off tacklers at will. He still try's it now but with all the injuries the upper body strength has faded.

Yeah he was a moth mate.
Very strong, years of gymnastics I believe.
But his speed was his major asset. I reckon it was the speed he hit and spun with that made him able to be a moth and bounce off tacklers the way he did.
You may be right mate.
Sad thing for us now is it doesn't matter, he doesn't have the physical attributes in speed or power/strength anymore to get him out of trouble. He was never a footballer as such, he was an athlete.
These days all FBs are footballers and athletes, second 5/8s basically.
Even if he had the body of a 22 year old I feel he wouldn't be a FB anymore. The games passed him by. He'd get a run on the wing still though.
If we had either of those two in 03 the grand final would of been ours. but we settled for the human handbrake byrne.
You can blame Ricky "NFI" stuart for that one. He also picked Finch over Thurston when thurston was off contract. Yet people were still wanting him to come back and coach us for 2013 earlier this year when he quit the blues.
Comment of the year:
Andrew Johns, Semi-Final vs North Queensland ,
"It's touched Lui's hand and travelled forward but that's not a knock on"
What did he play a whole 11 games for us in 1st grade, scoring 2 meaties, over 3 seasons???
He was never quick over 20, like his old man wasn't, but he wasn't slow over 100 when he wound up.
Still speed wasn't his asset, it was his frame and the power he carried to bust a tackle.
I personally thought he was a dud player. He came across & looked like he had an attitude problem but he actually suffers from depression the poor bugger. I havn't seen any medical records to support that but it is common knowledge in the mental health sector of nursing that he has been admitted to hospital more than once for major depression. I think when he was at the Roosters he wasn't right.
