Roosters to unveil Todd Carney… Tuqiri next?
The Sydney Roosters are set to unveil the signing of troubled former Canberra star Todd Carney, and have freed up more money for a possible offer to ex-Wallaby Lote Tuqiri.
The last-placed Roosters, who have former Knights mentor Brian Smith taking over as coach next season, will release utility Setaimata Sa at the end of the season.
With former representative players Mark O'Meley and Craig Fitzgibbon also leaving the club to play in England, there is speculation the Roosters could use the spare money under the NRL’s salary cap to launch a bid for Tuqiri.
The dual international, who is currently taking legal action against the Australian Rugby Union for breach of contract, has said publicly he would consider taking a pay cut to join an NRL team.
The Roosters are believed to be the only side in contention for Tuqiri’s signature, with the Tigers recently pulling out of the race, but have already spent some money on upgrading the contracts of youngsters Mitchell Pearce, Ben Jones, Anthony Cherrington and Jake Friend.
They have also come to a deal with Carney, according to The Australian.
The playmaker – who has been found guilty of drink driving offences in the past, had a $400,000-a-year contract with the Raiders terminated and was de-registered by the NRL until the 2010 season – is set to be unveiled by the Roosters in the next fortnight.
But Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce denied the club had made any official bid for Tuqiri at this stage.
"We haven't had any discussions with Lote Tuqiri's management or Lote," Noyce told The Australian.
"It's common for people to think that clubs will always be interested in those quality of players."
