He needs to be kept in a supportive environment with people he trusts who will keep him on the straight and narrow - although that's probably applicable to half the young players in the game today. Hopefully his time away in Atherton will have made him realize what his priorities should be.

Brian Smith is a country boy................he can play the adult with him.

                        • Welcome aboard Todd.

I just hope someone at the club has the brains to remind him that he'll be under a microscope and can rest assured Dill Rothfield and Bourbon Becky will be licking their shit stained lips at the thought of writing a headline about Todd Carney and the Roosters.

                          Chook.

TODD Carney avoided making the same mistake twice yesterday. Almost a year after being slammed for meeting NRL boss David Gallop in casual clobber, Carney returned to the league headquarters in a new suit and tie.

He was flanked by senior Roosters officials Steve Noyce and Peter O'Sullivan, who are quietly confident their new signing will continue to learn from past mistakes when he reports for duty at Bondi Junction in November.

After exclusively revealing Carney had agreed to terms with the Roosters in April, The Daily Telegraph can today confirm he will ink a $1 million, three-year deal by the end of next week. The sacked Canberra ace knocked-back approaches from St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers - and meetings with respective coaches Wayne Bennett and Tim Sheens - to become a Rooster.

Having monitored Carney's NRL exile with North Queensland bush footy team Atherton all season, Noyce and O'Sullivan are now satisfied the 23-year-old has turned the corner. Shown the door at Canberra following a string of alcohol-fuelled incidents, the talented playmaker was deregistered last July and barred from NRL duties this year.

He has filled the void living and working at Atherton's oldest pub, the Barron Valley Hotel, gaining a life-altering perspective on alcohol-related issues from behind the bar. But before he can pick up the last piece of his shattered NRL career, Carney needs clearance from Gallop to return.

That was granted in principle during yesterday's 20-minute meeting at NRL headquarters, where Gallop was handed a dossier of character references from politicians, sporting identities and police officers.

"We will review that, but on the face of it and subject to the conditions (of the contract) we will allow him to play next year, '' Gallop said. "He clearly accepts that he's being given a chance. I told him, `I hope to see you here in five years' time and we can talk about what a success story you've become'.''

O'Sullivan confirmed the Roosters had the all-clear to finalise Carney's contract, which will contain a number of behavioural clauses to ensure he stays on track. "We think Todd's grown up in Atherton and the move was a blessing for him,'' O'Sullivan said.

"We are comfortable that he will come back to the NRL as a valuable member of the community and the Roosters.''

Relieved after gaining Gallop's blessing, Carney vowed to be mindful of the nocturnal temptations of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. It's possible his mother Leanne could share his new abode. Ex-Raiders team mate Phil Graham is another option, with the speedster a chance to also join the Roosters next year.

"I've got a plan in mind to deal with it,'' Carney said. "It's probably better if I stayed right out of the nightlife scene and only did things in a team environment. I'm not pretending it's going to be easy. I've never lived in Sydney before.

"But what I'm looking forward to is joining the club, because with a new coach (Brian Smith) it will feel like a new club. There's a challenge there that I'd like to meet. When I come back to the NRL it will be more than 18 months since I last played, so hopefully people will understand that I've done my time and give me an opportunity to have another crack.

"I think I deserve it after sitting out for so long and living (in Atherton). I've really tried.''

                            ---

So it is a done deal now apparently?

                              • NRL approves Carney negotiations
                                Saturday, August 22, 2009

NRL CEO David Gallop has on Friday agreed to let the Sydney Roosters enter into negotiations with Todd Carney regarding the 2010 season.

Carney and his Manager, David Riolo met with the NRL and Sydney Roosters CEO Steve Noyce and Recruitment Manager Peter O’Sullivan on Friday morning to discuss the enigmatic players future.

The Club will now commence negotiations with the aim of finalising a contract mid next week. This contract is still subject to approval from the NRL once submitted.

Carney furnished a number of references from employers, local dignitaries and high profile members of the community and presented his CV in the 30 minute meeting.

Peter O’Sullivan has confidence Carney has learnt from his 9 months in far north Queensland.

“Todd has accomplished a lot since he has been in Atherton and has matured in his demeanour,” said O’Sullivan.

“His challenge will be to continue growing and learning once he is back in the NRL environment.”

The Sydney Roosters will continue to work with Todd on his personal and professional development.
