Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson considering appointing co-captains
by: James Hooper From: The Sunday Telegraph December 29, 2012 11:30PM

Roosters coach Trent Robinson may opt to go with two captains this season.

NEW Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson is considering naming co-captains at the Tricolours for the first time in the 104-year history of the foundation NRL club.

After narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon last season, the Roosters' new head coach has begun the process of re-building the NRL's youngest roster and one of his first assignments will be identifying the club's new leaders.

Braith Anasta's departure to Wests Tigers throws up more questions than*answers, with the Roosters having long been criticised for lacking the core culture*for long-term success.

But with the appointment of Robinson and the return of chief operating officer of football Brian Canavan to the most senior administrative role, fans can be optimistic.

After the club's final pre-Christmas assignment at a week-long camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, Robinson is continuing to assess the Roosters leadership group of Anthony Minichiello, Mitchell Pearce, Aiden Guerra, Martin Kennedy, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Frank Paul Nuuausala, Mitchell Aubusson, James Maloney and Jake Friend.

Robinson told The Sunday Telegraph he anticipated making an announcement about who will captain the Roosters by February.

"Leadership is based on your group of players and I'm currently going through the process of assessing the leaders in our group and from what I've seen so far, there are plenty of them," Robinson said.

"Whether there's someone who is really going to lead us or if there are a few people I can't say yet.

"I'm not saying I am going to go that way but I am definitely not fixed on one captain either. I have used two before and I think it develops players and it develops a strong group."

With 251 NRL games spanning a 13-season career, Roosters fullback Minichiello stands out as the obvious choice. But does Robinson appoint a short-term captain similar to when Luke Ricketson led the club in 2005 or does he look bigger picture?

Perhaps the best gauge is Robinson's*coaching stint at Les Catalans in the English Super League, where he used Remi Casty and Gregory Mounis as co-captains.

The next job will be finding the best candidate to compliment Minichiello. In halfback Mitchell Pearce and hooker Jake Friend, the Roosters have untapped potential. But are they ready for the*pressures associated with being the captain of an NRL club?

"Mini has been leading us in everything that we've done throughout the pre-season so far. He's a natural leader and he's really handled the role," Robinson said.

"I'll continue assessing the best candidates over the course of the next little while and then decide what the best model to take us forward is."

Because for the other 90 odd years rugby league clubs just weren't surviving with one captain.......

Who cares....its not like the captaincy is going to change much about the team. Its not like cricket where a captain can have an influence on the game through his decision making.

SKD is the only one of the more experienced players not mentioned as a leader.
What is my point? I don't know. I don't actually have one.

But isn't that why you have a vice captain ...to take over if the captain is indisposed ?

So whats the difference between having co-captains as opposed to a captain and a vice captain?

                          Oh dear

Is this the telecrap's idea of inception?????? Planting an idea like that, after I read that I think I need a nappy because I started crapping myself. Please Robbo don't buy into that.

JWH (C) Well respected, and has a good personality in the media. Very well liked by pretty much all rooster fans, puts his body on the line every time I have seen him take up the ball, and leads from the front by playing with pride. Capable of playing at least 60-70 mins per game, and one of those players who if given the captaincy will lift to an even higher level.

Cordner (VC) Too young for full captaincy but can be deputy to JWH, especially when JWH is off the field. We have seen enough from this kid last season to reward him with that.

FMD, I cracked up when reading that as well. Can you imagine how lazy we'd be if he were made captain. I hope our club pulls the plug on this guy after next year when his contract is finished and we never look back.

I believe Anthony Minichiello has been a fantastic player over a long period for the Roosters and a better role model for fans and young players would be hard to find. In saying that there is a time in every players career when they must step aside to benefit their side and that time is now for "mini". In Roger Tuivasa-Sheck the Roosters have a potential superstar. It would be a total waste to play him anywhere except for fullback. Every successful NRL team has a dynamic attacking fullback who is their teams key offensive weapon. As good as "mini" was , at nearly 33, he no longer has that potentcy. This looms as new coach Trent Robinson's first real big decision and will be closely scrutinised by the Roosters faithful. Does he make the easy call and stay loyal to "mini" or the hard but correct call and put the budding superstar in. With the knee injury to Tautau Moga and the departure of BJ Leilua there could still be hope for " mini to get some game time on the wing if required. As this is obviously "mini"s last year it would make no sense to appoint him captain. Mitchell Pearce is the most logical choice and can take ownership of his performances as skipper
