SYDNEY ROOSTERS will meet Penrith centre Michael Jennings on Monday in a bid to finalise a deal for the 24-year-old to join the club before the start of the season.

While the Herald understands the Roosters won't match the $600,000-a-season price tag Jennings would pick up at Penrith over the next three years, it is believed they are considering offering him a four-year deal worth up to $2 million.

While the Roosters move is all but a done deal, the Herald understands South Sydney have also been interested in the NSW Origin centre and have been talking to his management team since before Christmas.

Penrith general manager Phil Gould said the Panthers would not stand in Jennings's way if he wanted to leave his junior club, but would not fork out huge money to make up for any difference between the two contracts.

''I received an email from Michael's management last week requesting a sizeable payout of his Panther contract to make up the shortfall he would experience if he left Penrith to play for one of these other clubs,'' Gould said.

''Naturally, I informed his manager Panthers would not be contributing anything like that amount for him to play with another club. I told them his new club would have to pay if they wanted his services. Michael is in our salary cap for season 2013 and we are under no pressure to move any player at this time.''

While he didn't name the clubs, Gould admitted he was approached by two Sydney clubs before Christmas, inquiring about Jennings's contract situation.

''I was asked if I would release Michael if they could strike a deal,'' Gould said. ''I told them I would not stand in Michael's way provided Michael was happy with the deal and wanted to leave.

''Please read my lips. We have never shopped Michael to other clubs and we did not instigate these latest approaches.''

While the Roosters are confident of attracting Jennings to Bondi, Gould said he had been told that the Australian international would see out the final three years of his contract at Penrith.

Roosters boss Brian Canavan said he would sit down with recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan and coach Trent Robinson to weigh up the options.

''We are interested in Michael but we have to see what happens between his management and Penrith,'' Canavan said. ''We haven't spoken about money.''

There is another rumour doing the rounds that Souths have a spare couple of hundred under their cap and additionally Matt King has agreed before Christmas to retire if Souths can secure another centre which will give them enough to make a sizeable bid, they were close to signing Ayshford but now have turned their attention to Jennings. IMO, Jennings Manager appears to be leaking things to the media to start a bidding war between arch rivals the roosters and Souths.

His problem is that he turns up to training hung over and doesn't give a $hit about the Riff or that fat arrogant guy who used to coach the Chooks before we won a premiership.

POS has been the best recruitment officer we have ever had and he's doing a bloody great job if he can get us Jennings.

              Chook.

According to the SMH, Soufs have also been trying to secure Jennings.
This is another reason and incentive to sign him....just to get another one over them!

                  Chook.
Chook I agree that POS is doing well but the signing of an already established player is probably not what he was hired to do. I reckon his job is to spot young talent with the potential to develop.

Jennings signed with the roosters, so lets wait for the club to officially announce it, if it's not this week will definitely the following week.

No doubt the addition of Michael Jennings would help this team in regards to the centre position as we’re short in this area but it’s questionable whether he can stay motivated on %10 of our salary cap. This guy is known for his attitude problems and we recently just released Bj for similar issues.

If it’s purely based on footballing ability it’s a no brainer as he has unlimited speed to burn I’m just concerned after the gloss wears off at being at a new club he may go back to his ways.

Nothing is official so far but it’s an interesting story none the less.

It'd be all part of his role as recruitment officer imo. Regardless of whether the player was established or not, he'd be part of the process.

I hope we keep POS for decades. His midas touch is reaping us some of the best youth I've seen in a Roosters jersey for a very long time.

                        Chook.

Correct weight.. If there was anything really in it, POS would not be at the Roosters. The NRL would have brought sanctions against him. The fact they haven't suggests they have nothing on him.
