3 players off contract this year who could win us a premiership
The last player we need out of those is Jarryd Hayne. Injury prone, poor positioning and plays for Parramatta.
We need a hooker not a fullback. JT is gonna be 31 in 2014. Carney would be my second choice but we dont need him either, only if Pearce leaves.
thank you once again for replying to one of my posts by repeating what previous dribble you have already posted, having no relevance to what i posted.
you idiot.
With an 800k rise due in the cap, another rise expected for 2014 + potentially SBW's salary there's enough room to move there. A playmaker with creativity is the key.
Who would you sign?
We dont need Thurston or Carney, we have your boy JNr JNr
Can you expand on why you think the recent signings have weakened us defensively?
I mean i think you have to look at who the alternatives would have been.
To me Jennings seems a capable defender when he has his mind on the job. And the alternative to him was realistically either Adam Henry or RTS. The former is a woeful reader in defence at centre. And the latter has not played a game of league at centre in his life. He's a good front on defender but I can't imagine he would prove to be a better defender than Jennings in his first season there.
Maloney and Anasta is a tough one for mine. Going off stats Maloney would appear the worse of the two defenders. But if you go back and look at line breaks and tries against us down Anasta's defensive area its obvious that a lot of Anasta's defensive errors would not even go down as missed tackles. There was multiple times where he either slipped over in the line creating a hole, let his man run around him or simply watched them run right by him without laying a hand on them. Maloney on the other hand being a quicker lateral mover was often there to make the tackle but was ineffective. A bit of work on his technique in the off season could improve his tackle effectiveness. Anasta's defensive issues were not something that could really be improved in this late stage of his career (ie pace, attitude/ego).
Hard to tell how the backrow will be made up at this stage. But let's say SBW replaces Aubusson in the starting side. Granted he may take time to readjust, SBW is a solid defensive player. And I personally though Aubusson was pretty poor defensively last year, cost us numerous tries, yet probably saved a couple also tbf.
I in part agree with your point about the side's creativity lacking, I just really don't see how these signings will have a negative effect. I thought no Mose alone would have you excited about our defence this year mate.
Btw, SBW will create plenty. And Pearce now has the players around him to make the most of his excellent passing game. Think of the difference between Jennings taking a Pearce cut out in space compared to when BJ was receiving good balls like that. The increased potency and finishing ability of the new signings will make it far more obvious when Pearce "creates" opportunities.
A few reasons;
Anasta was a quality fringe defender, I disagree with you there. I think a lot of the covering he did for the likes of Leilua went unnoticed, one of the better fringe defenders in the comp.
I think Jennings has improved his defence since he bulked up, his tackle efficiency is actually quite good. However he's not a great reader in defence and whilst his speed and agility cover up some of his deficiencies he's not a great defender by any means.
I'm also not convinced that Guerra is a good defender either, he seems to read the play well but just seems to have some absolute brain farts at times. I'm not sure if it's fatigue or just poor concentration but he misses some really easy tackles.
A left fringe of Jennings, Maloney & Guerra worries me. One option is to switch Pearce & Maloney but then you're just pairing Maloney with SKD which isn't any better.
I agree with you, I think Maubs will be the backrower who misses outs and starts the season on the bench. Or at least it'll end up that way if they choose to blood SBW slowly. However he's the only one of our backrowers who's proven to consistently make 30-40 tackles a game at high efficiency. He doesn't have the mobility anymore to defend in the centres but he's still an exceptional fringe defender and takes a lot of workload of our middle third players who imo struggled this season when they were being asked to make 30 tackles a game their workrate in attack dropped off immensely.
I'm tentative to start writing off players because I have no doubt Robbo's system of playing field position will make defence so much easier, defending high up the field instead of on your line due to poor discpline (penalties & errors) will be a breathe of fresh air. But it still worries me, I think our backrow is attack heavy and there's lots of vulnerabilities on the left fringe.
People in the know have said that Carney was very keen to come back but we have already said no.
Crazy if true, this guy will be winning premierships and leading NSW to SOO victories in the not to distant future. I'll quit my job, drop out of uni and drive him around personally if they're worried about his behaviour.
6, work rate and defence can be improved with what we have. They way I see it Cordner, JWH, Kennedy, and Guerra are all still players who will improve. For me they are players who can produce quality and work rate.
Regarding creativity you make some fair points. That's why I keep saying RTS will be the difference between an average season or a great season. If he finds his feet and plays fullback he has that x-factor which can make a difference. If Mini plays the year at fullback it will be a wasted year.
RTS is the great hope, I just don't want to put too much pressure on him. He's still a teenager, it could be a while before he realises his potential. I mean it was easy to see Barba's class back in 2007/2008 when he debuted but it took him some time to finally put it all together...
I don't see how people don't rate Hayne that well? Whenever he has been fit and on the park in that horrible Parramatta team, he sets up all their tries and scores his own... How often would we see something like 5 line break assists and 3 try assists throughout the year? You can't keep making someone do it all..
My biggest concerns are a lack of workrate in the pack and getting good service from our hooker. But I'm reluctant to make any rushed and/or ill-considered signings. We should know what needs addressing after the first 10-12 rounds or so.

You not used to it yet Kegs? Hes been doing it long enough!

I looked at this and thought you meant it's crazy he's considering leaving and that he will be winning premierships in the not too distant future with Cronulla..
Then I realised what you meant and remembered that Cronulla will never win the comp!
As much as I have been lobbying for Carney to return, looking back at what he did to us, in hindsight if you asked me now I would say no to his return.
We gave him a number of chances and provided a great opportunity for him but he would constantly abuse our trust and go back off the rails. Blame slothfield all you want, in the end he broke promises he had made to our club. Rather than show an apologetic empathy this year towards us, he instead blamed us for his abrupt behavior and misdemeanors in an article which was published during this season. The only mistake we made when we sacked him was not sacking FPN along with him.
I'm glad we have gotten rid of him. Welcome Jimmy Maloney.
Comment of the year:

I find it amusing that you're harping on about our defense yet you're advocating Carney's return.
Carney would be close to the worst defensive player in the NRL.
