Anasta was a quality fringe defender, I disagree with you there. I think a lot of the covering he did for the likes of Leilua went unnoticed, one of the better fringe defenders in the comp.

I think Jennings has improved his defence since he bulked up, his tackle efficiency is actually quite good. However he's not a great reader in defence and whilst his speed and agility cover up some of his deficiencies he's not a great defender by any means.

I'm also not convinced that Guerra is a good defender either, he seems to read the play well but just seems to have some absolute brain farts at times. I'm not sure if it's fatigue or just poor concentration but he misses some really easy tackles.

A left fringe of Jennings, Maloney & Guerra worries me. One option is to switch Pearce & Maloney but then you're just pairing Maloney with SKD which isn't any better.

I agree with you, I think Maubs will be the backrower who misses outs and starts the season on the bench. Or at least it'll end up that way if they choose to blood SBW slowly. However he's the only one of our backrowers who's proven to consistently make 30-40 tackles a game at high efficiency. He doesn't have the mobility anymore to defend in the centres but he's still an exceptional fringe defender and takes a lot of workload of our middle third players who imo struggled this season when they were being asked to make 30 tackles a game their workrate in attack dropped off immensely.

I'm tentative to start writing off players because I have no doubt Robbo's system of playing field position will make defence so much easier, defending high up the field instead of on your line due to poor discpline (penalties & errors) will be a breathe of fresh air. But it still worries me, I think our backrow is attack heavy and there's lots of vulnerabilities on the left fringe.
couldnt agree with you more. how many times last season did anasta give up soft tries becuase a player got on the outside of him. It happened twice against the warriors with hurrel or what ever that u20s centre name is.

defensively jennings is solid when he needs to be. as for guerra and maloney guerra just needs more game time as i think his lapses were a result of not being comfortable with those in the line around him. maloney, well all i can say is we will see and given he is now with pearce and has a better chance of SOO i can only see his weaknesses improving, esp as robo is coach.... think back 2010 when he was our def coach.

I'd be willing to risk it all on a Todd Carney comeback.

One of my favourite Roosters of all time, despite everything.

Hayne. I would release any player in our squad to see this guy in the rwb. Superstar.

Big call considering he killed our entire 2011 season and 2012

A special player, who knows how he'd be under Robbo...IMO Smith & Anasta stitched him up

Back to thread: It's far too early to surmise about our defense, talk about taking the handle to Robbo & assume we need others to compensate as "its always greener" on the other side syndrome is looking glass bull $hit

& to assume we cannot win with what we NOW have is chicken little stuff, pipe dreams dont normally add up when salary cap is part of the rules

I believe the club has achieved a sterling result thus far given the constraints, to consider further marquee options is after all "fancy deliberation"

By mid season, with Moga, Seluini, Mortimer etc to cover during SOO we will harp on about how we are looking good in the top 4 with depth.

For fun I would pick Isaac Luke for consideration

                        Bring him back for sure
What's everyone's fascination with Isaac Luke? The bloke has brainwashed at Redfern buying into there ' we are the pride of the league' bull s$&t. I'll have a Mitch Rein Matt Srama, Cameron King or Kayne Lawton anyday over that grub.

I think we're a premiership threat already with our current squad.

I'm hearing 4 year deal for my boy, that'll get your blood boiling.
That Dragoons deal has been known for a long time

If he performs 3/4 as good as he should with this team behind him, any deal will do.

totally agree. smith puts away carneys mum and carney loses his shit. understandable. then you have the captain of the team wanting his position to ensure his own longevity in the game and cover up his lack of workload (remember back to when fittler wanted him at lock).

however in saying this while we have maloney i wouldnt want him back but he would be incredible with RTS, moga and Jennings. ATM i think we need a tamou or a tariq sims
