Thats all well and good but if you want to sign the best players, they hold the whip hand here because of the amounts they can earn elsewhere in comparison to league. We would have had to offer SBW double or even triple what we have paid him to get him to contemplate a longer term deal. There is no way we could do that and remain under the cap. This way, he gets to maximise his earnings and we get to sign him at an affordable fee.

        2. Canavan is very optimistic about our chances this year, even whilst still being realistic about our situation.TBH, If we don't make the 8 next year, I will be extremely surprised.
I'll be upset if we don't make the 8 this year.

Not that I wasn't during other seasons, but this year we have our big 3 marquee signings. Last year I felt that we had no real marquee players (when I brought this point up on here all I got was "nah man SKD is massive!!! We have lots of good players!!!") So expected us to go badly. The year before that I expected a premiership... until certain players ruined it for us.

Yeah... our recruitment and coaching are $hit if we miss out on the 8 this year. I have big expectations... no other clubs have recruited as aggressively as us in the off-season. I feel management planned it all by purposely going under the cap whilst waiting for good players to become available.

Smith... is gone but I think he did his job (i.e. sack all the rubbish players and take 100% of the blame during a transition period where we didn't een spend our full cap.) Not saying this makes him an awesome coach but I'm kinda glad that he did his job.

Canavan has revealed the club will allow Williams the freedom to continue to explore his options in other sports - if it means he'll remain with the Roosters.

SBW' management will up the anti for his next League contract if his return to League is a success.
For the Roosters to be able to retain him they will have to convince him that staying in League is better than playing Union they will be up against the All Blacks & Super 15's where he can earn 1 million per season so it wouldn't surprise me that his management will want 1 million dollars per 1 season to stay & be allowed to play Japanese Rugby & Box.

          It's totally SBW call.

As previously discussed, these one year deals will become more and more often in the future, and there are no rules to stop it...
            100% correct.

In some ways the League is lucky there is a Japanese Union which plays in the off season to League because otherwise all these guys would play Union only because of the money in Union. This way the League gets to retain there players on less money.

The Roosters (and the Wankos) have the advantage of being able to offer a 'lot of opportunities' after football. Don't underestimate the power of Nick and the network to ensure that the upfront cash is respectable, with potential future benefits if you play your cards right.

SBW said in his press conference with us that his goal is to get "fullfilment"out of his return to league.
This tells me he wasnt really enjoying union.Hopefully he has a successful season with us and stays around longer...

Hope so. His management will demand top dollar & at the end of the day they dont care where he plays so long as he is being paid a motza. He no longer has a favour owing to Nick after this year & I think the Rugby World cup is on next year & I think it is a pretty big honour to play for the All Blacks & unless he is paid way overs I think Rugby will entice him back. I hope Im wrong.

If SBW said after this year that he was going back to Rugby for 2 years till he was 29 & then he was coming back to League again Nick would agree to that. SBW gets the best of both worlds with Nick IMO. Doesn't mean Nick is wrong.

Then why did it take Robinson to sack BJ and move on lazy Mose. I think you too bought the spin.

Oh true, I'm not for a minute saying he's GOOD. He just did his job.

I was never a fan of BJ (on the wing) or Mose (who would do 1 massive hit and then go quiet - wasn't he our strongest player?)

Robinson has already done a lot of work himself - the signing of Jennings was masterful. If he wins this season it will be his own doing!

If it was only the chequebook at play he might be on the GC right now instead of in Bondi...
