  • O'Donnell confirmed 1yr deal

The Sydney Roosters have today announced the signing of Luke O’Donnell to a one-year deal for 2013.

O’Donnell joins the Roosters and makes his return to the NRL after spending the last two seasons with Super League club Huddersfield and will provide depth and experience to the club’s forward pack.

Roosters Head Coach Trent Robinson was pleased about the arrival of the former North Queensland Cowboys forward, saying his influence on the relatively young forward pack would prove beneficial for the Club.

“Luke has plenty of experience, will fit into our system here well and we’re looking forward to him starting,” said Robinson.

“Together with our other senior players in the forwards like Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Martin Kennedy and Frank-Paul Nuuausala, he’s sure to not only help on the field but it will be great to have him mentor the younger forwards we have coming through the ranks.”

The former Australian and NSW representative player also expressed his desire to return to Australia with his young family and his delight at returning to the NRL with the Sydney Roosters after having most recently played seven seasons with the Cowboys from 2004-2010.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing in the NRL again, and can’t wait to meet my new teammates and getting stuck into training,” said O’Donnell.

O’Donnell will join the Roosters for training upon his return from England within the next week.

I see benefits from this deal. He wouldn't be on much money, and now that we have Cordner tied up long term there is no rush to throw him in the deep end. We can still use him as a bench weapon and have O'Donnell play tight to begin matches. LOD has plenty of mongrel and go-forward in the Myles style of play.

        Kennedy
        Friend
        Waerea-Hargreaves
        Williams
        Guerra
        O'Donnell

        Seluini / Aubusson
        Cordner
        Tasi / Nuuausala
        Evans

I like it. I like it a lot.

With so many to choose from, methinks that SBW may not be utilised in the forwards.

One year for a 32yo with his injury & disciplinary history is just right IMO, how many years would you have wanted to sign him for??

He is on probably a smaller base wage plus large incentives.... If he backs up for 2014.... the incentives paid this year will hit the 2014 cap..

Pretty sure if he performs well enough for an extension & he stays fit, we'll be able to get him to extend. If he turns out to be more like the Riddell signing, then we don't have to pay him out, seems smart to me.

I would think that to in most teams in the comp, but I think we have more talent in our backs than our forwards. With Jennings and SKD in the team they will surely be first choice centres. Moga wont be too far behind...I cant see SBW playing anywhere but lock or second row this season unless we have a string of injuries to our backs.

So much for the youth policy. This is a short sighted decision imo. To lose two young backrowers in Taka and Cherro for a 32 yr old with dodgy knees who hasn't played NRL for 2 years is a massive gamble. I know many here have on rose coloured glasses regarding LOD, but I can't see this decision paying off in the long or short term.

                            Chook.

Looks imo he is old but lets be optimistic here he's got some good experience up from and some leadership. Really looking forward to our season to start can't wait
