The word bogey has several meanings. Entertainingly, the first meaning given in the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (and prefaced as ‘informal British English’) is ‘a piece of nasal mucus’.

The other meanings of the word may be less unpleasant but all have negative connotations. Most football clubs have a bogey team, meaning a team that either always beats them or against which they habitually enjoy bad luck, as in ‘Bolton are rapidly becoming Arsenal’s bogey team’. In the sport of golf, a bogey represents a score of one above the expected score (known as ‘par’) for a particular hole. So if the par for a hole is three and it takes you four shots to complete the hole, this is a bogey. In children’s stories the bogeyman is an imaginary evil creature often used by exasperated parents to try to force young children to behave, as in ‘Behave or the bogeyman will get you’. A recent headline in the Daily Telegraph (17.08.07) read ‘Putin needs the West as bogeyman’, meaning a negative factor that can cause problems.

The word bogey is commonly thought to be connected to a number of words in different languages that relate to the supernatural. Among these are the Welsh word bwg (pronounced ‘boog’) and the Slavonic bog, meaning ‘god’.

and to be very clear focus on the underlined words

There is a widespread belief in football that certain teams will always play well against others, irrespective of their form or league position.

Hence this means Manly IS our bogey team

    Thank you in advance

If you know anything about English Football, Bolton is generally accepted as a weaker team that manages to beat Arsenal. The 20 teams in the league Arsenal beat every other weak (less so these days) don't consider Arsenal their bogey team because Arsenal are expected to win.

Manly has been one of the more consistent performers and are more often then not expected to win because they are the superior side. 2012 the perfect example. Both Manly and Penrith beat us twice, Manly finished well above us, Penrith below. Penrith haven't performed nearly as well as Manly over the last decade, but still beat us.

I would moreso suggest Manly have the wood over us. Splitting hairs here though, must admit was surprised with the stats you listed of their winning % over us.

Hopefully we beat them both this year.

Bogey team is British sports slang for a team which usually manages to win despite an apparent weakness.

I must say I think Dubes has this argument sewn up. Manly have been a good team for a couple of decades give or take. Are Melbourne, and the Broncs also our bogey team???

          Penrith it is.

Check the net I couldnt find an interpretation that associates bogey to a weak team beating u just a team that gets u regardless, as the last quotes says irrespective of their form OR league position!
            Manly it is!

No u dont get it, a bogey team is not a weak team its a team that gets u regardless of its positional ladder, weakness or dominance. Its about always getting rolled by that team regardless of its status.

Oh ok...it feels like we always make life difficult for them regardless of how we are travelling.

New Zealand are Melba's bogey team. Don't they often win at AAMI Park, due to the rubbish weather?

Cronulla have often had the wood on St George, no matter how mighty the big red V may be at the time. The fact it's a local derby makes it the more entertaining. The old Wests Magpies would always beat Parra at Lidcome Oval, even during the Eels heyday. History is full of bogey teams in differing eras..quite interesting really to see how the dynamics have changed over the years, well for a nerdy history buff like me it is.
