SBW cleared to play
SONNY Bill Williams
has
been cleared to make one of the most eagerly awaited comebacks in rugby league history and will start on the interchange bench for Sydney Roosters in Thursday night's NRL season opener against South Sydney at Allianz Stadium.
Williams was named to wear jersey No.16 in his first NRL appearance since walking out on the Bulldogs after round 18, 2008, and the 27-year-old superstar is expected to be thrust into action midway through the first half.
Fellow recruits Michael Jennings, James Maloney, Luke O'Donnell and Sam Moa were also named to make their debuts for the Roosters.
With more than 8000 tickets remaining on sale for the match, frustrated Roosters officials were keen to put paid to speculation Williams was still recovering from the pectoral muscle injury he sustained playing rugby union in Japan last November and would miss the game.

Sources close to Williams said there was no doubt he would play, but he won't start the match.
When he does take the field, the dual international is set to play as a right-side second-rower - suggesting Mitchell Aubusson is the player he will replace.
While Williams has not played
league for five years, Roosters coach Trent Robinson has no concerns about his ability to adapt as he was widely considered to have the potential to become one of the game's greatest players before his code switch.
Williams has also played at the highest level in rugby union, helping New Zealand to win in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the Chiefs to victory in last year's Super Rugby competition.
Surgery to repair his pectoral muscle tear and the postponement of November's bout with South African boxer Francois Botha until February 8 have left Williams with less time to prepare than Roosters staff would have liked but they are confident he is ready to play.
However, reports on breakfast radio that Williams would miss the match sparked speculation he may even play for Newtown in the NSW Cup to gain match
fitness
after he did not feature in either of the Roosters trials.
Fairfax Media was told that a Jets representative at a NSW Cup management committee meeting on Tuesday raised the issue for clarification of the eligibility rules.
Roosters chief operating officer Ted Hellier reassured fans Williams was not in doubt for the match against Souths.
''We're happy to confirm that Sonny is playing,'' Hellier said. ''We want people to come to the game and we are encouraging everyone to jump on board now as there are still good tickets available.
''There are just over 8000 tickets left to go and we are pushing hard. We want to sell the game out and the message we want to get out is a call to arms to Roosters fans to come and defend our turf and not let the Bunnies outnumber us.''
Williams was named alongside O'Donnell, prop Martin Kennedy, second-rower Boyd Cordner, utility Daniel Mortimer, winger Michael Oldfield and forward Tinirau Arona on a seven-man bench.
With the Rabbitohs boasting one of the biggest teams in the NRL, it is expected that Robinson will want to go with four forwards when he cuts three players but the Roosters have no cover for hooker Jake Friend.
Moa, 26, who was recommended by Craig Fitzgibbon after playing alongside the Roosters' assistant coach at Hull FC, was named to play in the front row.
He played one NRL match for Cronulla in 2008 before moving to Hull FC the following season

Robbo was talking to Gibbsy and Brandy on Sports Today last night......he said SBW will definitely play.
Also said Cordner has a shoulder problem, but it's been diagnosed as not too serious. It just needs to be managed and monitored. Said Cordner might play, but reading between the lines, it seems that he'll be rested for a week or two.
