  • Jake Friend - gives away too many penalties

    Get your thoughts on this:

I don't really think Jake Friend is a 80min player and you do notice in games where he loses is cool and tries to tackle everything. He gets buggered and you can hear the refs constantly pointing him out for been offside or laying around opposition around the ruck. I think he needs to be on rotation with Mortz, each getting 20min per half to accommodate the lack of endurance.

    43 tackles & 2 penalties against him...
This guy gives 110% each week & cops a bagging on here...

I would like to see him change his game plan & perhaps run more from dummy half, put the defence in 2 minds as to what he's going to do, but until more of his team mates help out & share the load in defence, i'm glad for every minute he plays...

It's not so much the other forwards sharing the load its more the fact he is the small bloke in the middle who opposition forwards target.

It's up to coach Robinson to coach him, and the team in how to play better.
The first thing he should be teaching Jake and others is... that from dummy half... to pass the ball backwards!!!

I don't think he is a hot head, nor gives away so many penalties each week.

He tackles alot and does make a few dummy half runs but he is safe and dependable just like Simon Bonetti was. You can't really do much if the referee's are telling you to stay away or hurry up and get off the player early.

See it is hard for any of other players to understand the different interpretations of each Referee as they all referee a different style than there other colleagues. I am glad we got this game out of the way with being crucified by them as in the next coming weeks you will see that we will hardly give away any penalties as most of the ill discipline sides of 2012 were treated quite harshly over the weekend just to make sure that they get the non-sense out of their game for the 2013 season.

I think it was a good ploy from Daniel Anderson, however I hope we don't see more and more of it... So you can't really blame Jake Friend for that as I still believe Crocker dropped that ball cold and Friend had nothing to do with it.

If you have the sports ears at the ground and listen to the referee's, the moment Jake makes a tackle you hear them calling his name to move. Its ridiculous.

He's and Jared's are the only names being called instantly.

Why would he do that? St George won a premiership in 2010 passing the ball 1m forward in every play-the-ball.

Obviously he has a reputation for doing shitty stuff like hands on the ball etc to slow things down. We know it, so surely he knows it. Its now up to him to try and change that perception much the way Paul Gallen has changed the way refs view him.

I thought he was one of our best on thursday night, he's always trying and never gives up. The penalty that was given against him to Crocker was a joke, ref never called move then Crock just lets go of the ball!

I like Jake Friend, however he does give away too many penalties and has done for the last 4 years.

If the refs are picking on him, so be it - stop trying to slow the ruck down and leave that to others. He can't just doing the same thing every week, get penalised for it and whinge that he is being picked on. Use your brain and change your game.

I do think this is worse when he gets tired. I'd be happy for Morts to come on in the last 10 of each half. As well as giving a Friend a break, he gives the team a bit of spark when the opposition are tiring.

thats why he should take the legs more and might not get steamrolled for a try like on thurs, he plays to many minutes especially when we have a hooker on the bench, smith did it, i hope robbo doesnt but putting a hooker on the bench and use him for 15min is suicidal as it defeats the purpose of a four man bench.

Morts definitely should've gone on around the 30min mark. Jake was stuffed by then and Morts would've added spark for that last period in the first half. Morts and SBW could've tried a fresh man play and created something.

Commitment isn't his problem, ball delivery is , too slow and predictable from Dummy half, doesn't count opposition numbers nor assess weaknesses on the run or approach to ruck.

People talk about Friend's defense and while he makes a lot of tackles he certainly gets dominated quite a bit too. George Burgess trampled him on his way to the tryline although to be fair he would have been hard for anyone to stop at that point.

Friend has been an automatic selection in our first grade team for a long time. It is high time he started showing everyone why that is the case.

JAke gave away 2 penalties one of which was a joke call by the ref. So your call that he gives away too many penalties for this game is harsh.

However, he has a lot of players aiming for him to tire him out. An easy fix is to give him a 10 min break/relief by moving him to 2nd row and letting Morts/Selluini a burst where they give there all.
