I actually agree with you that when Flanagan uses Gallen on the fringes that he clogs up the backline and touches the ball way too many times, but that's not Gallen's fault. He should be playing in the middle of the field, that's a criticism of Flanagan.
I disagree about making metres, I think it's the most crucial part of any side. Having a great metre eater in the pack is essential for nearly every side. If you're not making metres up the middle you're going to struggle in the game. James Graham & Aiden Tolman absolutely dominated packs last year with their relentless workrate up the middle and it allowed their bigger more skillful players like Pritchard, Eastwood & Kasiano to play on the back of that.
Can't go sideways before you go forward.
