I think you have zero idea what a lock forward's role is in a side. Here's a hint though... have a look at the job Bellamy, Hasler, and Bennett ask of their lock forwards for your answer.

Gallen is a prop who is too shit to play prop. He does NOT play in the "middle third" (you really need to stop using this phrase btw), he runs on the edges all bloody game.

Making metres means **** all if those metres are just a cheap 10m 8-9 times per match following up a half break and quick play the ball with a pointless settling hit up straight into the retreating defence. Cronulla get very little chance at laying on backline movements and exploiting any ascendency they earn with the ball because Gallen is forever calling for the ball back on the inside when Carney is trying to drift across field (watch how many 4th and 5th tackles he butchered vs Souths).

He is an average player with supreme fitness, so he can hit the ball up a lot (averages about a carry every set). this gives him impressive metres gained stats, but very little else.

Middle third player is the exact same term you'll hear Bellamy and his players use when talking about their lock and props. Get with the times Danish.

I actually agree with you that when Flanagan uses Gallen on the fringes that he clogs up the backline and touches the ball way too many times, but that's not Gallen's fault. He should be playing in the middle of the field, that's a criticism of Flanagan.

I disagree about making metres, I think it's the most crucial part of any side. Having a great metre eater in the pack is essential for nearly every side. If you're not making metres up the middle you're going to struggle in the game. James Graham & Aiden Tolman absolutely dominated packs last year with their relentless workrate up the middle and it allowed their bigger more skillful players like Pritchard, Eastwood & Kasiano to play on the back of that.

What sets gallen apart is his motor and ticker. He keeps going when others stop or rest...that's it no special skill differential.

You mean Ryan Hinchcliffe, Greg Eastwood and Jeremy Smith? lol, what the fark do they have the Pauly Peptides doesn't?

Hinchcliffe is an average lock, Eastwood is a fat lazy f***er that can't go more than 30 minutes a game and Smith goes missing far too often for an International back-rower.

To say that Gallen offers nothing more than impressive metres gained stats is ridiculous, he played 15 games last year for 3 tries, 6 try assists, 49 offloads, 4 line breaks and 11 line break assists, how many locks that get 175+ metres a game pull out those sort of attacking numbers? Also, George Burgess dominated both us and the Dragons, but Gallen made him look crap on Monday night.

Besides the fact that all their lock forwards (Stewart, Pritchard, Lowrie, Hoffman etc) over the years have all been excellent ball playing forwards who set up and make plenty of linebreaks on the fringes.

Lowrie is hardly a ball playing forward, lol. And Hoffman isn't a lock!

Gallen plays the first 20 minutes on the left edge and once Wade Graham replaces either Fifita or Ross he moves into the front row for 40-50, then goes back out to the edge.

It is a Netball term, the court is divided into 3 thirds

The attacking Third, the middle third and the Defensive Third.

The middle third has a centre circle in it where the centre's restart play after a break or a goal is scored.
