In the comp there are 2 classes of half, thurston and the rest. Thurston is the only half that has the natural talent and ability that everyone on here is talking about. All these other guys like DCE, Reynolds, cronk have no more ability than pearce (in fact far less in many instances) but know their roles and do their job. Thurston aside, halfback in the modern game is mechanical. In attack, draw A defenders and pass out the back with the odd cross bomb, run or grubber; and kick to space. Thats it. The days of the heroics of the Johns, Langers, Sterlings are over.
Despite year after year playing in a crap team yet statistically still ranking in the top 5 for halfbacks, it is never good enough. Is he without failings, no, but its completely a matter of how you define the question. "Pearce is shit". Ok einstein, do we have anyone at our club better than him? NO; can we get anyone better than him? NO (Reynolds, DCE, Thurston, Cronk are on long contracts elsewhere or would never come to us anyway for obvious reasons ie Reynolds at souths). The fact that those others mentioned are literally the only halfbacks better than pearce (if you even believe that) means that frankly, we have the next best player in the comp. Who would you rather? Walsh, Fien, Wallace, Kelly after 2 good games, johnson after 1 good season.
While the above doesnt remove your right to comment/critique performance, its bemusing listening to some of the dribble. A rational person (which I have realised are in short supply on here) evaluates the facts and realises that we have a 22 year old with 100+ games under his belt, current NSW 7, finally with some decent players around him, has been in the top 5 7s for the past few years despite everything AND we wouldnt be able to get anyone better either because they dont exist OR are on long contracts elsewhere.
So what are we discussing...
