Just to put it out there (devil's advocate just for fun/discussion)... did he take a hit so that the club could improve in the future?

He could have done better if he kept Carney and Myles for example, but that would have been toxic for the club. Instead he cleaned the club out, came 3rd last and was sacked before he got to use the players he'd banked for. With Smith, the Brumbies are going fine (and defending well.)

Bit like Keating's "recession we had to have"... conservatives mock the notion, but statistically after the recession our economy grew. When Howard left it was shrinking... but I'd say Howard got most of the credit for the growth.

Similarly Gus missed out on a premiership with us. Sticky got one and contested a few others with a squad that Gus had played a significant hand in building.

Smith, Keating and Gus... we'll never know how any of them would have gone if they'd stayed.

Bellamy has built a supercoach reputation but struggled as NSW coach. How will he go after the Storm + big 3?

Wayne... has struggled with a star studded Newcastle. We are yet to see him perform without a magical squad.

Without Manly, Des has had a good season and a poor start to 2013.

Everybody wanted 1/2 the current parra squad after they made the GF. Right now you'd struggle to give away 1/2 their players. Mortimer has had to work hard for his spot on the bench.

Reputations are a fascinating thing IMO

I agree with Jack Gibson, Bellamy & Bennett are two amongst a hundred or so, they are the exception to the rule, so you don't make a decisions based off the exception, you make it based on the general rule.

Three losses in a row and this website will demand his sacking.

              Good post jizzmeister.

Smiffy took one for the team literally IMO.

In a few years time I reckon some (players, fans and suits) may look back and actually realise what he did for us.

I'm sure the current coach appreciates the kids he bought thru for starters. And the peanuts he let go.

While I would have liked to see Smiff coach a decent roster he'd helped develop/build I also believe his time in RL as a head coach is probably over. The new breed of coaches have arrived, it's their time.

I'm glad we made the change but I still look back at Smiffs few seasons and dig what he tried to do for our club.

And I know it won't take long, just a few losses, for the new coach to earn the wrath of the nutters. I've seen glimpses already, when their fan faves haven't been selected every week. The Tasi/Bosden/Napa/Evans/Moga brigade. All those offseason expectations, unmet.

I personally see a lot of a young Smiff already in Robbo. Honeymoon baby.

              You know it makes sense.

I disagree mate, uncle Trent is the real deal.

He is the best long term coaching prospect I have seen at this club in a decade. Has all the attributes to make a great coach, good man management, articulate, smart, determined, ugly.

We've got him for 3 years, no need to rush anything.

                Chook.

P.S The game has past coaches like Smith, 4 years was always one year too many.

Maybe my post was unclear my brotherfromanothersmiffymother, but in no way was I dissing UncleTrenticles.

Quite the contrary, IMO he's been our best signing in years. He was my one worry mainly inexperience but I'm am happy to admit he really looks the goods and am proud to see our Uncle has taken over from our Daddy so well.

So ugly too, glad they punted Noycee, the competition for ugliest coqq would've been tough.

Still it's honeymoon time. No need to rush as yet, as you said. I am just realistic and know somewhere down the track UncleTrenticles will face a drought and that's when we will learn if he's the real deal. That's when the knives will come out and that's when we will learn if he's a lifer or not.

On another note see how our Dads doin??? You contacted him as yet about that job???

Coaches on 3 + 2 especially with a young, building side test comes after the new approaches wear thin , successive losses and player revolts are quelled. Supporters for life - although the Salary cap has caused many a Clubs favorite to migrate and so too does a little of our loyalties.....

Robbo did get a good whack with the ugly stick.

My mum...the most fanatical st George supporter you could meet... thought Steve Price was the ugliest coach ever until she seen Robbo

                                Maybe not.
