mate, constantly shedding your established first grade players for younger players 'coming through' is pointless.
we got rid of o'meley, mason etc so we could let younger players 'come through', and look where that took us.
To a grandfinal the following year????

i knew someone would say that.
carney took us to the grand final the following year, but the two years after that is what im reffering to.
having players like leilua, takairangi, masoe, naughton, Pritchard, kierallah and co play for us as players 'coming through'.

If he was as good in attack as he is in defence and visa versa everyone on here would say this is a bargain. Maubs is a very good player, happy with this signing.

You forgot RTS, Moga, JWH, Cordner, Guerra, Dan toops. Players coming through take time and perseverance. You can't go from unestablished to established in the space of one game. I think that the development of our players has been fastracked if anything. Most of the players in that list are in their early 20s and already guys like Guerra, Cordner, and JWH feel like they've been around forever.

You really think that letting Mason and O'meley go was a mistake?????

          My goodness.

That's the risk you take. 4 year contracts should only be used for special players IMHO with rare skills.

Happy with the signing is a massive call. 2 years on 350k I wouldn't be unhappy, but to sign any player for 4 years, apart from your big strike weapons is a recipe for disaster. A half like Pearce who we already invested deeply in, Jennings, maybe Jarred and your rising stars on smaller coin, yes, but Aubbo. that will do me.

Uncle Nick must have got a petition from R6 and backwards in the mail this week.

To be honest I think Maubs is underrated as hell, he does alot of un-noticed work. He seems to be the type of guy who does all the little things right. Contributing with running decent lines and solid defender I think it's great we've brought him back.

kegs has been mixing with dogs this week, some of it has to rub off.

true, but for every good player you have come through, there will be three less than good players. although rts, cordner and jwh have been good for us, moga and tupou have been mixed bags, and Guerra has been solid. letting go of aubo now so that evans, napa, tago, martin can 'come through' would be a waste. although these guys show promise, we have no idea what they will be like in FG, whereas we do know what aubo will give us.
and no, I don't think letting go of mason and omeley was a mistake, I just used them as an example.

Signing consistent players to long term contracts compared to 'strike players' makes more sense to me than visa versa...

If you don't think Maubs is worth a 4 year contract because we could easily develop players with more potential then fair enough but I don't understand the argument that Maubs shouldn't be signed to a long term contract because he's not a player who plays off the cuff or with massive amounts of flair.

Do you disagree that Maubs is one of the best defenders in the comp?

I thought I smelt something familiar. Being a dog owner, I mean.

I bet all Raider fans were happy to sign Campese to a 5 year deal and look where that went.

4 years for a Maubs type player is at least one year too many.

                          Chook.

I disagree Chook, I reckon Maubs is exactly the sort of player we should sign for that sort of contract - mid range money, brilliant hole runner at best (see 2010), hard working backrower at worst (and before someone chimes in with stats, All Run Metres is not where you judge a second rower's workrate). By all accounts good trainer and stable personality nso good influence for the younger guys. Guys like Maubs are foundational in my opinion and, with the new salary cap, this is solid first grader money we are paying him, not overs.

I do see your point 6. And I agree Maubs is a good defender. One of the best in the comp? Meh!

I wouldn't go handing out 4 year contracts to many players, and I wouldn't hand one out to someone just because they are a good defender.

His spot is in the backrow, and there is potential for others to overtake him in 1 or 2 years.

I just think that Uncle Nick didn't want to let another club man go after releasing Symonds. He didn't want backlash from the supporters, and petitions flooding his inbox.

I reckon the Daily up up Cronulla Telegragh is having a lend of you all, Maubs wants to return home & captain coach the Ballina Spatchcocks. Buzz told me.
